Postby jjb9450 » Wed 18 Feb, 2009 11:33 pm

Hm. I haven't had occasion to use Communicator on XP in a good long while. I just installed it on an XP box, and, lo and behold, you are correct, Messenger crashes within a couple of minutes. So does Navigator.

I'll see if I can discover anything else.

I'm not a Windows expert, but try right clicking on your Communicator shortcut, select Properties, then the Compatibility tab. There, select Run this program in compatibility mode for, and select Windows 98.

See if that helps.

setting "compatability" to windows 98

Postby jjb9450 » Sun 22 Feb, 2009 10:39 am

naw. there isn't an option for "compatability"when i right click on communicator. Then again, i don't have a shortcut for it either. i went into "all programs", went to communicator, and right-clicked on it. I then clicked properties and the options are: general, sharing, and customize. I cannot do what you explained anfter clicking any of those but thanks for your feedback. I dont know what to do with communicator. I cant even uninstall the suite. WTF?!

It works from the All Programs menu too. Right click, select properties, then there should be three tabs, the third should say compatibility. You should select 98.ME compatibility.

Are you posting form the machine with wich you are having the problem> I've been assuming that you are on Windows XP from your UA string.

By the way, looking at yotr UA string, you seem to have picked up some adware:

You might want to look into getting rid of that.

Well, you could try installing CCleaner:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

It has an uninstall tool that may help. It can also help clean the hard drive, and the registry, which may help matters.

Your User Agent seems to be changing with each of your posts. Are you just playing with your system?
One of our regular responders here has had no success in trying to install Netscape 4 on XP. On the other hand, someone else was able to make it work. I haven't attempted it.
Why are you trying to use an obsolete application?
To clear the name from the Add/Remove list, see [sdp=95253]this[/sdp] post.
If you have multiple versions of Netscape installed it is possible that there are incompatible files all mixed up in commonly-named folders. (I always do Custom installations and give each product its own folder tree.)
Then just Delete the program folder tree if you can identify the proper one.
You'll have to examine the Registry (both HKLM and HKCU), under Software\Netscape, and select the applicable keys to delete.

The old time response to such uninstall issues was to reinstall the problem application, in this case Communicator. Once its installed, don't even try to run, go to Add/Remove and uninstall it. That which is required to unistall shoulc be restored by the reinstall.
