How do I find out what version of Mozilla I have? How do I import mail and addresses to Mozilla?
The fix: Somehow the 'all' had gotten changed to 'unread' in the view messages tab. All the old messages are back.
Terrific! I am glad that your problem was so easy to fix.
Your current user agent indicates that you are using Netscape 4.8 under Windows 2000, although you may not be using the system that had the problem. To check yourself, just get your version of Netscape 4.x up and running, then click on Help|About Communicator. If you are happy with Netscape 4.8, then there is no rush to upgrade, although I encourage you to do so. In any case, leave Netscape 4.8 installed so that a newer browser will automatically import some of your data (like the mail).
Be sure first to back up your Netscape 4.x user profile. If you are really sold on Netscape, then install Netscape 7.2, the last full Netscape version with mail. (Netscape 8.0.x has only webmail, no normal E-mail agent.) Netscape should automatically ask about importing your data. Even Netscape 7.2 is a bit old-in-the-tooth.
All Netscape versions past Netscape 4.x have been based on the Mozilla browser. The Mozilla Suite is a lot like Netscape and includes an E-mail client, but does not have some proprietary items (like Netscape Webmail and AIM). The latest version of Mozilla Suite is 1.7.11. Installation of Mozilla is also suppose to import your Netscape 4.x data.
The
Netscape Browser Archive (SillyDog701) here at SillyDog will guide you to Netscape 7.2 for Windows. Mozilla 1.7.11 may be found at
mozilla.org. The direct link to Mozilla 1.7.11 is
Mozilla Suite. Good installation instructions and more may be found at Ramona's
Netscape Solutions.
The far future of Mozilla-based browsers appears to be in the split products of Firefox (browser only) and Thunderbird (E-mail only). I do not believe that Thunderbird will import Netscape 4.x mail, although it should import Netscape 7.x or Mozilla 1.x mail. (Netscape 8.0.x is based on a Firefox build.) I see that your initial post was with Firefox 1.06, so you must have at least a bit of experience that browser.
Post questions about these newer browser in the
Netscape, Mozilla, and Firefox Forum.
