They are not in trash. I have downloaded and installed a new 4.8 and problem remains. How do I fix?

You've posted, using Firefox under Windows XP, in the Netscape 4.x forum. I, or some other moderator will move your post to a more appropriate forum, if necessary.

Please tell us:

1. What browser/mail program are you talking about: Netscape 4.x, Netscape 7.x, Netscape 8.x, Mozilla 1.x, or Thunderbird?

2. What operating system are you using (you posted using Windows XP)?

3. The detailed sequence events that lead to this loss of mail. Has it happened more than once?

I can not promise answers, but the above info will give posters a chance to help you.

missing emails

Postby robert » Sat 06 Aug, 2005 5:52 pm

1. I use Netscape 4.8 for email
2. XP OS
3. It happened the 1st time yesterday, I was looking for a pdf that was no longer included in an email. and the inbox emails vanished. I was searching for the mail files without success.
It happened again today, and I was not doing anything out of normal, however, none have disappeared for 4 hours.

Take a look at you mail directory which should be located at:
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\Mail.

Before you try anything, Back up Users Profile.

For each mail folder that you have, you will have two files. One will not have a file extension, the other will have a file extension of .SNM (for example, inbox and inbox.snm). [These last two sentences (and other info) were taken from the Netscape Solutions pages covering Netscape 4.x.] The one without a file extension is your data file while the one with the .SNM extension is the summary file.

Try, with Netscape closed, deleting only the .SNM files (don't touch anything else). Then restart Netscape and see if things are better.

You may also want to check the VIEW|Messages setting to see if you have it set so that all messages can be seen as opposed to just new ones (or something like that).

Once that you have determined if there is any hope of getting all your mail back or not, try to upgrade either to Netscape 7.2 or Mozilla 1.7.11. These should be able to import your mail from Netscape 4.5 (or higher) as long as it is still installed. Both should be stable under Windows XP whereas Netscape 4.x sometimes has problems on XP.

I do not have any answer as to why your mail is vanishing. You may always post back with more info, but few people post about the old Netscape 4.x browsers.

Fixed my problem. Now new question. How do I import mail to

Postby robert » Sun 07 Aug, 2005 6:48 pm

Thanks, Profman
How do I find out what version of MOzilla I have? How do I import mail and addresses to Mozilla?
The fix: Somehow the 'all' had gotten changed to 'unread' in the view messages tab. All the old messages are back.

Terrific! I am glad that your problem was so easy to fix.

Your current user agent indicates that you are using Netscape 4.8 under Windows 2000, although you may not be using the system that had the problem. To check yourself, just get your version of Netscape 4.x up and running, then click on Help|About Communicator. If you are happy with Netscape 4.8, then there is no rush to upgrade, although I encourage you to do so. In any case, leave Netscape 4.8 installed so that a newer browser will automatically import some of your data (like the mail).

Be sure first to back up your Netscape 4.x user profile. If you are really sold on Netscape, then install Netscape 7.2, the last full Netscape version with mail. (Netscape 8.0.x has only webmail, no normal E-mail agent.) Netscape should automatically ask about importing your data. Even Netscape 7.2 is a bit old-in-the-tooth.

All Netscape versions past Netscape 4.x have been based on the Mozilla browser. The Mozilla Suite is a lot like Netscape and includes an E-mail client, but does not have some proprietary items (like Netscape Webmail and AIM). The latest version of Mozilla Suite is 1.7.11. Installation of Mozilla is also suppose to import your Netscape 4.x data.

The Netscape Browser Archive (SillyDog701) here at SillyDog will guide you to Netscape 7.2 for Windows. Mozilla 1.7.11 may be found at mozilla.org. The direct link to Mozilla 1.7.11 is Mozilla Suite. Good installation instructions and more may be found at Ramona's Netscape Solutions.

The far future of Mozilla-based browsers appears to be in the split products of Firefox (browser only) and Thunderbird (E-mail only). I do not believe that Thunderbird will import Netscape 4.x mail, although it should import Netscape 7.x or Mozilla 1.x mail. (Netscape 8.0.x is based on a Firefox build.) I see that your initial post was with Firefox 1.06, so you must have at least a bit of experience that browser.

Post questions about these newer browser in the Netscape, Mozilla, and Firefox Forum.

It just struck me that you may only use Netscape 4.x for E-mail. If so, this is fine, and you still may install Netscape 7.2 or Mozilla 1.7.11 to import and handle the mail (or keep Netscape 4.8, if you so desire) while you use another browser for browsing. You could then, if desired, install Thunderbird to import your Netscape 7.2 or Mozilla 1.7.11 mail. Its your choice.

Mozilla

Postby robert » Mon 08 Aug, 2005 7:55 am

Profman,
The Mozilla that I have, but do not use, is 1.7. For now, I'm fine with the 4.8 and Firefox, but my last question was: How do I import the 4.8 mail to the Mozilla. Last night, when I tried, I was unsuccessful. THanks in advance. Bob

Open up the Mozilla Mail and click on Tools|Import. Select Mail and click on "Next." Choose Communicator 4.x and click on "next." Now choose the profile to import from. This should be the easiest method of mail importation. (Just in case, also back up the Mozilla Profile info before doing this.)

If you already tried this and it failed, post back for a cut and paste approach.

robert:

Here's a good link for you:

How do I import my profile info from Netscape Communicator 4.x?

Sorry if I get too verbose, but I try to be complete when I have the energy.
