Installation of Netscape 7 on Mac G3

Postby Basso » Thu 05 Sep, 2002 9:51 am

I have some problems in installing Netscape 7 on my Mac.
I work with a PowerPC G3, 266 Mhz, and MacOS 8.6.
I downloaded both Netscape-mac-full and Netscape-macOSX-smi and
I didnt succeed in installing one or other.

1) Clicking Netscape-mac-full provides an error message telling that
this archive is corrupted

2) I tried installing Netscape-macOSX with CarbonLib 1.6, clicking
on archive Netscape-macOSX starts the installation which ends with
a type 3 error.

Help! does anyone have solution? I thank you.

I would recommend re-downloading the Netscape-mac-full file, but not from
the Netscape website, but the NS Browser Archive available on this website.

Go here: http://sillydog.org/narchive/#ns7

The other file you downloaded will ONLY work on Mac OS X. It will not work
successfully on any version of classic Mac OS. At least, in my experience,
that is the case. Even if you use it with CarbonLib, you'll still have probs.

In the meantime, I would also recommend upgrading your Mac OS to at
least version 9.1 if you can. My old Rev A Bondi Blue iMac runs OS 9.2.1
in Classic mode, and both Mac OS 9 and X (10.1.5) run Netscape 7.0 on
this ageing computer just fine. You should be able to find a few lo-cost
second user copies of Mac OS 9.x available on auction sites like eBay.
