Installing 4.8, uninstall 4.7 first?

Postby Win95 » Thu 10 Nov, 2005 1:23 pm

On my win95 PC I have 3.01 & 4.74 and on the win98 I also have 7.1 If I want to switch to 4.8 should I uninstall 4.7 1st to avoid conflicts or is leaving it on just fine?

Thanks, Lou

My past experience has been that older versions of 4.x did not need to be uninstalled, a habit which was carried over to v.6/7, with disastrous consequences. My suggestion is to get out of the "on top" installations. Uninstall 4.74, and then install 4.8. The user and plugins folders will be picked up. And, to be a bit more up-to-date, upgrade to NS7.2, removing 7.1, first, of course. Check the Program Files|Common File|mozilla.org|GRE| and see if the 1.4.... folder of 7.1 was removed after uninstalling. It has a cranky uninstaller, and it should go before the 1.72.... GRE of NS7.2 can work.

Personally, I never had a problem intalling newer versions of Netscape 4.x over older versions of Netscape 4.x. The differences between 4.74 and 4.8 are minimal, so I'd expect you to be able to overwrite one with the other without any problems.

I installed 4.8 over the 4.7 w/no problems - so far. It updated the files it needed to and kept the old profiles (b/up's were made just in case).

Thanx 4 the advice. We'll see how Java runs in 4.8, at times 4.7 would have it's problems. Probably need a new Java program in order to run better w/the current Java imbeded in today's Web sites. Can a newer version of Java be added to Net 4.8 or is that impossible?

Don't hold me to anything, but I'd like to believe that if the Java libraries were installed into /Communicator/plugins that Netscape 4 would use that plugin for Java instead of its own Java.

I believe NS4's java is based on a version of Java created by Symantec, not Sun. Also, I think that the latest Java version supported by Netscape 4.8 (the latest build) is 1.1.5, according to NS4's Java console.

I just checked the Netscape App's. in Preferences:

Java = J2re1.4.1_02 (version 2/20/03)

Java Script = Wscript.exe
(3/16/04 version date)

Javaws file = Wscript.exe

Java-archive = J2re1.4.1_02

I looked at old b/up cd's and find various dates on Java files for 4.7. I had downloaded Java for Opera browsers over the yrs and it seems Netscape got included in the users of those files.

My most current Java download is jre-1.5.0_02-windows-i586 but I believe it won't load in win95, only 98 and above.

Might as well experiment as I need to reload win95 onto another HD, this one will be deleted or used just for new software to see how it works. Thanx 4 the replies.
