Installing AOL 8.0

Postby Edward » Sat 08 Mar, 2003 2:26 pm

A friend has an older notebook computer, a Micron Millenia.

He wants to upgrade AOL 7 to AOL 8, but the AOL 8 CD installed version 7 instead.

As best as I can recall, it has Windows 98 (original), IE 5.5, a 166 MHz Intel Pentium processor, 32 Mb of RAM, a 2 (two) Gb hard drive, and a Phoenix BIOS from 1996 that did not have any Y2K issues. Yep, that old...

As the notebook currently is, it does not even meet the system requirements for AOL 7 itself, but the CD installed 7 anyway, and it appears to work fine. It had been sluggish at first, however I discovered unused items that loaded in at Windows startup, once they were removed, there was a noticable improvement in system performace, and AOL 7 worked even better.

Since the notebook does not meet AOL 7 or 8 requirements, but installed 7 anyway, would there be some possible explanation why version 8 will not install on it? :?:

Yeah, the fact that AOL 8 needs twice as much RAM to run as 7, and the only compelling reason to upgrade is to be able to auto reconnect

I finally broke away and got a real ISP, Earthlink.

At this point, it's probably not even worth spending any money on it to upgrade it. Thanks for the info re RAM.

I had missed this one. And, I would not recommend AOL8, unless you have a new system. I don't know why a CD would even have AOL7.
FYI, I have non-AOL cable, and my cable company lets me have AOL at a total fee which is the same or lower than any other broadband.
The main purpose of my using AOL, is to be in as a beta tester, and inform other beta tester that there is such a thing as Netscape.
I also use the the Gecko-based AOL 7.0 which never went anywhere.
