Installing Netscape 4.8 on machine with NS 4.77

Postby notnac » Wed 22 Oct, 2003 8:22 am

Hello Moderators and others,

I have an older computer that has NS 4.77 on it and I have a newer (newer is a relative term) computer that has NS 4.8 on it. I want to move the emails, address books, etc. from the older (NS4.77) machine to the newer (NS4.8) machine.

So my thought was install NS 4.8 on top of NS 4.77, and then I could just copy the files over and create new profiles.

My queston (finally) is should I deinstall NS 4.77 before installing NS 4.8? Or just install NS 4.8 on top of NS 4.77.

(My machines are too old for NS 7.1)

Thanks for any help,
Joe

4.8 is very similar to 4.77, so there is no need to uninstall 4.77. You can continue using the same profile, as long as you have had no major problem, in the recent past. As far as the Mail files, so long as you have the mail set up the same way as your other installation, you can copy the Inbox and Sent files(files with no extention only), and export first, in the other computer, your address book as a .ldif file. Such file can be copied, and then imported by the address book of the former 4.77 computer, which will convert the .ldif file as a readable address book.
I assume that you are going to copy the files to a disc. If you do that you make sure that the file properties do not indicate that the file is read only.
Just uncheck the box.

If you're newer computer has enough memory, I strongly recommend downloading Netscape 7 instead, as you will have a much more improved internet experience.

Fulvio & Hartlandcat,

Thank you for your responses. I have NS4.8 up and running. My newer computer (now no laughing) is only 200MHz. So I have to use NS 4.8.

On my newest computer, a laptop I bought from my company when they laid me off, is all of 366MHz. And I am using NS 7.1 on it and like it muchly.

Thanks again,
