Invisible lines and words in browsers

Postby brigide » Thu 13 Mar, 2003 8:38 pm

AMD Duron Processor, 997 MHz, 224 MB RAM Netscape 7.01, 4.79, and IE

I had been having a lot of trouble with 7.01 Mail ( most of the time extremely slow, not downloading from Yahoo mail, not responding when I tried to do more than one thing at once). Last night two things happened and the only thing I did was uninstall BullGuard and delete one of the files that didn't disappear---the other file wouldn't delete): Mail is lovely but most sites have missing or invisible lines or words. This site seems to be alright. At first I got errors when I tried to log into some sites. [ Okay, I still do---assertion (?) error. ]

Also, why is Trash 98 MG with only 18 little messages in it. And my mail folder named itself pop3.norton.antivirus instead of yahoo. Did I use Norton once, or something? If these are issues, I can put them in a new topic.

This is a Netscape + something else issue.
You are asking yourself if you used Norton. I would not know, and I had no idea what BullGuard was. I had to read up. It seems to be from Europe. and it sounds good, but like other such programs, I would be concerned to use to it.
In case, other readers may not know it is an AntiVirus/ Firewall program. It has continuous upgrades. I could not find anything about the company which sells it, but it should be checked first.
As for the incoming mail being changed, you can always change it back. Programs with AV/Firewall have been known to cause havoc to the operation of Netscape.

The missing/invisible lines and words are when I go to an internet site. It may be a java error. Are there java assertion errors which would cure Netscape mail and damage websites? Can I uninstall Java? Which one? Runtime SE v 1.4.0 or 1.4.0_01 or Java Web Start? The error said "/src/share/native/sun/awt/font.../truetype.c Line 1458 JIT must be enabled to repair the problem." I can't find that file, or text in a file. I don't know what JIT is.

Brigide,
I had typed nearly a dozen lines, and I clicked something, and I lost everything. But it is not so bad. Yes, I am positive that it is Java related. JIT is the compiler, which has to be enabled. Go to Start|Settings|Control Panel|Java plugin and select the Advanced tab. The compiler check mark should be there. Enable both Javas. If it does not do any good, uninstall both, and then reinstall the most recent one. I have never seen anything like you describe. The line number may refer to the preferences, but I am not sure.

pop3.norton.antivirus is what was used in Norton AntiVirus 2001 to scan incoming e-mail. That was used as the server name, with username/mail.server.name as the login in the Netscape settings.

It is possible that Norton was on the system in particular at one time.

And, I quote, from a news item of the year 2000: Symantec Corp. [NASDAQ:SYMC], makers of the Norton Anti-Virus family of PC-security software, said Tuesday that it has signed up Web portal Yahoo Inc. [NASDAQ:YHOO] as its first major customer for what it calls "carrier-grade" virus protection for e-mail.
