Apple today announced iPhone 5, the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, completely redesigned to feature a stunning new 4-inch Retina display; an Apple-designed A6 chip for blazing fast performance; and ultrafast wireless technology—all while delivering even better battery life. iPhone 5 comes with iOS 6 with over 200 new features including: the all new Maps app; Facebook integration; Passbook organisation; and even more Siri features and languages.

iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world, with a 7.6 mm anodised aluminium body that is 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than iPhone 4S.

iPhone 5 also brings LTE technology to a number of countries apart from USA. Australia is included.

The new 4-inch Retina display on iPhone 5 has resolution of 1136 x 640 (326 ppi), compared to 3.5-inch Retina display on iPhone 4S (960 x 640 at 326 ppi). By making the screen taller, not wider, iPhone 5 is just as easy to use with one hand while enjoying even more of your content including amazing apps optimised for the larger Retina display, widescreen HD video, a full five days of your Calendar and more of every web page.

Other improvements (over iPhone 4S) includes 1.2MP photos and 720p HD video on front facing FaceTime Camera (the back iSight camera is 8 megapixel), ability to take still photos while recording video,

iPhone 5 comes with Lightning connector with improved battery (up to 8hours on 3G, 10 hours on Wi-Fi and 225 hours standby time)

iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate, and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the 64GB model with 24-month contract. In Australia, for a recommended retail price of AUD$799 inc. GST for the 16GB model, AUD$899 inc. GST for the 32GB model and AUD$999 inc. GST for the 64GB model (outright price). iPhone 5 will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores, and through select Apple Authorised Resellers. iPhone 5 will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK on Friday, 21 September, and customers can pre-order their iPhone 5 beginning Friday, 14 September.

Good to know that iPhone 5's LTE (4G) will work in Australia. Currently Telstra and Optus (and Virgin Mobile).

Vodafone Australia is said to bring 4G LTE next year.

OMG!! This maps flap. Judging from how these things go, this will get settled, maybe some money will change hands, maybe not; but Google Maps and Navigation will be back on the iPhone and a couple of months later no one will remember that it all happened. All of these guys have more to gain from working together than they do from squaring off against each other.

Apple does not always get things right the first time.

In spite of my antipathy for Apple products and my general nature as a Microsoft fanboy, Apple gets it right the first time way more than does Microsoft.

Love and kisses.

Perhaps more on hardware.

Apple's MobileMe received terrible criticism at the launch. The new Map received the same. Clearly those online services were not Apple's strength.
