iPod mini and iTunes Music Store (outside USA) when?

Postby Antony » Fri 11 Jun, 2004 7:59 am

Early in January, [sdt=4309]Apple announced iPod mini[/sdt]. Back then, the international releasing date was April. They then delayed to June. From current sources, the available date in Australia is expected to be in mid July.

Besides the iPod mini, the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) has also been a very long wait for non-US customers. Some rumours says iTMS will open in Europe soon, but what about New Zealand and Australia?

When iPod mini first announced, people were surprised about the price of it US$ 249 which is only US$ 50 cheaper than 15GB iPod, as [sdp=24343]DJGM mentioned[/sdp] - $50 more for additional 11GB storage. However, the demand for iPod mini was really high. I would like to repeat my point - US$ 249 is not just for the storage, you are playing for the compact, design and technology.

Recently, Apple announced [sdt=5919]AirPort Express with AirTunes[/sdt]. The AirTunes might give some hint on the next generation of iPod.

On the other hand, iPod can be used as a portable storage device, and it would be wiser for me to get a larger storage one, of course.

So now, my question, which iPod shall I get?

iPod mini finally

Postby Antony » Wed 07 Jul, 2004 6:16 am

People in Australia can now buy iPod mini (8 July 2004) with a price tag of A$399. Though, there is still no news on when they will begin shipping to customers. So finally, if you've been waiting for an iPod mini you can place your order now (expect to be "Arrive By 24th July").

The RRP for iPod 15GB, 20GB, and 40 GB are: A$449, A$598, A$799. iPod mini has only 4GB storage space, but it's compact size and tough enclosure make it a popular option.

Now, I have to rethink if I need an iPod, and which one to get.

All Australian prices are inclusive of GST.

In the UK, iPod mini's RRP is £179, while iPod 15GB is £248.99.
An iPod mini is nearly £70 (£69.99) cheaper than iPod 15GB in the UK, but only A$50 cheaper in Australia.

I have to take my words back.
At today's conversion rate, £1 = A$2.56,
£179 = A$460, which is a lot more than the iPod 15GB in Australia (A$449)
And with £248.99 (an iPod 15GB in the UK), it would be A$640, which is more than enough for an iPod 20GB in AU.

IMO, £179 is still a way too expensive price for the iPod mini. Typical Apple overpricing!

Well, £179 (A$460) is far too expensive for that compact 1000 song music player.
But with A$399, although still quite expensive, but the price is more reasonable.

I have to partially disagree with that. Apple products are more expensive than PCs, but when compare with high-end notebooks (PowerBooks), they appears to be cheaper than branded PC laptop, and more reliable and lighter.
Plus, the entry level notebook from Apple (12" iBook) is somehow cheaper than any similar level of branded PC notebooks.
