Is it the right time to buy a Mac?

Postby Subir » Thu 30 Sep, 2004 3:30 pm

I like in the UK & I was just wondering if now is the right time to by a Apple Mac? :?: I would like to buy it from the Apple Store (UK). I would like to get either a PowerMac or a PowerBook. I know the PowerBook currently uses the G4 processor, should I buy one now or should I wait until Apple release the PowerBook G5? Or I should buy a PowerMac G5, but should I wait for Apple to release the 3GHZ version of the PowerMac G5? I am NOT interested in the new iMac G5 though.

I have never owned a Mac in my life & this would be my first (an early christmas present to myself!). I don't even think I have ever even used a Mac in my life! :(

I am also buying a light blue iPod mini.

My budget is £5000.

Any help is useful (to me :P)!

It depends on the timeframe of when you intend to purchase again. 64-bit comtuing is becoming ubiquitous today, so unless you want to purchase another Mac in three to five years so that it supports the latest and greatest, hold off for the G5.

But, there's nothing saying that you can't use an old PC. 64-bit applications have yet to make a mass-scale introduction. For example, I'm running an old P2 233MHz w/ 160MB of RAM on Windows Server 2003, and it's actually fast enough for me. I only do word processing, spreadsheets, and Internet browsing with this one, so I don't need the latest. But, if I were to do something like authoring or rendering, then I would want something newer, such as a G5 or an AMD64.

So, it depends on what you'll be doing, and how often you plan to purchase.

If you don't really need the latest of the model, you can get one now. However, PowerBook G5 still requires some wait.

If you want something portable, get PowerBook, otherwise, PowerMac would be better off, but remember PowerMac does not include monitor (monitor extra). Otherwise, iMac G5 is a good choice.

If you want some indication on weather it's a good time to buy or not, try http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ but beware it's a rumour website, and based on rumours and statistics.

If I were you, I would wait until Christmas for the special bundles (read: discount) or new model around Christmas.
