Al,
Most new Macs come with a large hard drive, and you are free to upgrade it or even add an additional one (Power Mac)
All new Macs you buy will have Classic Environment included for you to run OS 9 applications, but not boot into OS 9.
As for your cable modem, if it output to normal network port (CAT5), then it will be fine.

Wait until MWSF 2005 and see if there's any new products.

It would help a bit it if i say this:
Around 512 MB of ram or more, (can't decide on 512 or 1 GB)
17 inches.
total cost under 2500

512MB of RAM should be enough for adequate performance, unless you intend to run memory-intensive applications such as Photoshop or Virtual PC a lot.

I am also thinking 512 MB RAM should be enough for casual everyday use. My sister has a PowerBook G4 833MHz with 256 MB of RAM and it runs pretty smooth with a few Mozilla windows open.

Maybe you want to consider getting a machine (from whichever vendor you like) with DDR2 and PCI-Express (PCI-E) included in them, as these are future technologies.. and adding new video card, more ram later on will be easier with these new technologies. I'd say it's a good bet Apple will be adding these to the iMacs, PowerMacs etc.. and maybe they'll announce such a machine at the Apple expo that is in two weeks.
