Well, it looks the same as 7.60 TP4. I had a crash earlier while it was running, XP reboots instead of the old 9X BSOD, so I don't know whether the crash was related to Opera or something else, like an ad on a web page.

It almost got called 7.60P5.

The BSOD (well, reboot - you can change some registry settings to make it show you the BSOD) is probably hardware or driver related.

Don't be surprised by my UA flipping from Opera 7.5x Linux or Win, Netscape Communicator 4.8 Linux, Dillo 0.8.0, Mosaic 2.7b5 Linux, or Firefox 0.9 Win.

It's called Opera 8 because there were so many changes made to the browser that a 7.6 change wouldn't have done it justice. Though this is the case, those who registered with Opera 7 will be able to update to 8 for free.

FWIW, that has been the case for a while - if you buy a license for Opera vX, it'll work with vX+1 (but not vX+2).

One difference is that Opera 7 licenses purchased after Opera 8 Beta was released (I may be wrong - it may be all O7 licenses) are one per platform per household, where as it used to be one per computer. So, if you've got five computers in your house, two of which run Linux, and three of which run Windows, you now only need to pay $78 (for one Linux and one Windows license), instead of $195.

Or, you use the free version. The ads are very tolerable.

Unless you want to customize the way opera looks and the ads get in the way of your customizing ;)

This Opera press release has some indication as to the new version number and why they went with Opera 8.

I will wait till they got a stable release of opera and decide if I want to get it as my new browser. I like the 7.5 version.
