Is this forum too dumb to solve this?

Postby DJ EL » Fri 06 Jun, 2003 12:04 pm

Hello, let me briefly describe my situation. I recently installed a new program, which I downloaded via the internet, called "mogen." It was a music program. When I had initiated installation, my back ground went fuzzy, and I didn't think too much of it. However, after I shut down my computer, I recieved an error message about not being able to find a "config" file. Now, I cannot log into my computer! Does anyone know how to fix this without sacrificing my data? All help is appreciated.

I will try to help you, but you will have to help yourself, because most people who are dumb, are not good mind readers.
I did a google search, and I came up with just about everything, except a music program, and at the bottom, Google suggested that it was possibly mispelled. May be it was ok, as spelled, but there are several configuration files. Whatever that program did, it screwed up your computer. Do you have an up-to-date Antivirus program? Was the file scanned? There could be so many things. You may try to go into safe mode, Type F8 when you first the computer, and it may be going into the Control Panel, and remove the program if you can find it.

Insulting the moderators and volunteers that volunteer there time here, is NOT the best way to get help, continue it and action will be taken!

That aside, I spent close to an hour trying to find this 'mogen' program, I can't find any references to it. It sounds like some virus or something that has corrupted your install of Windows XP, the easiest way to get your data back - put the hard disk in another machine and copy all the data to the other computers hard disk/s.

I searched too, didn't take me long at all!
I came up with (URL removed by Moderator)
DJ EL is evidently the victim of a botched circumcision.

First of all:
Trere is always an option called Windows safe mode.
Second:
When Windows starts up and some of the main data is missing, it is easelly recoverable by booting Windows from Your CD Rom - loosed data is recovered automaticlly.
Third:
Check if any virus is present
Fourth:
Check your computer for spy components
Fifth:
Some of the programs can not be uninstalled by normal way. For that purpose use Regcleaner 4.3 by Jouni Vourio / its uninstall menu.

Note:
This forum is not dumb. It was designed for Netscape users. Of course it has also Windows forum (it is needed because Windows is unstable OS with a lot of holes and other useles crap).

If You DJ EL instaled unreliable software, you should know that in case of any problems You are more or less on your own!

Alright, I think you guys are giving heck to the wrong person.

Seems to me it is SisyPhus88 who said you were dumb, net DJ EL
I know neither.

I don't think it's true anyway, SisyPhus is probably having a bad hair day :!:

None of my business, but DJ EL had a problem and wanted help.
Shouldn't be downloading programmes S/he doesn't know about, however, we all do the same from time to time.

I recieved an error message about not being able to find a "config" file
You need to post the EXACT error message and Windows version, and if known, the manufacturer or website link for that "mogen" program that started the problem. At that point you can do a groups.google search to help yourself, for example:

==========copy/paste=================
From: Kent W. England [MVP] (kwe@mvps.org)
Subject: Re: HELP!! XP won't start!! Missing \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM FILE
Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware

If your system will not boot because "Windows XP could not start because
the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" or "Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE",
try these steps in this sequence:

1) Last Known Good: Reboot and press F8, then select "Last Known Good
Configuration"

Once booted into either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, you may use System
Restore to return to a previous state. System Restore cannot be accessed
unless the system is bootable into one of these modes. However, run your
system for a bit after Last Known Good restore, since you may not need
to do a system restore.

2) Automated System Recovery capability in XP Pro BackUp:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302894

This will take you back to a specific point in time when you did the
backup. Your system does not need to be bootable for ASR to work.

3) How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307545

This article describes a manual method to restore the registry, if LKG
and SR fail.

4) CD Repair: Boot from CD, select Upgrade, then select Repair.
Preferences, apps, & settings are preserved.
