aol.com is a the primary site where FF 5 presents some issues for me. In particular:

- the scrolling news at the top left column of the page cannot be manually scrolled by clicking on the forward and backward arrows.
- the video featured in the top right hand column will not play nor will the four video links under it

Other than these issues, FF 5 works well. These issues, however, are bothersome enough to relegate FF to the also-ran category. In short, I opt to use Chrome which offers no issues in browsing whatsoever. I would like to get FF to work properly, however, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Let me get this straight. You have issues with FF5, not playing correctly stuff at aol.com?
Have you heard of IE Tab Plus which fakes IE with certain sites? v.2.3.x is compatible with FF5, and my FF5 portable had aol.com as home page, but, playing directly the way you described did not work, and neither 3.1.18 did. I don't have Google Chrome, which I reported gave me all sort of problems, but I tested the site with IE8.
IE8 burped as well as it could, but worked, so, I tried, again, FF3.1.18 which had IE Tab Plus, and it worked as poorly as IE8. Then, I went to FF5, and I install IE Tab Plus, and, sure enough it burped along beautifully.
I believe that Google Chrome is smart enough to sense sites like aol.com, so it should work for you. But, as far as Firefox is concerned it is another case of a microsoft-centric site, so it needs the addon.
By the way, aol.com is not this bad, all the times, but it has happened to me, in the past. Hardly a reason to dump Firefox, especially if I can't get Google Chrome to reinstall.

IE Tab Plus does not work with FF 5 but IE Tab Classic does and it worked beautifully. So... I'll be able to make greater use of FF thanks to you, Fulvio. Right now I'm enjoying IE9 which I'd forgotten about over the past few months but I now know that I can open FF and use it whenever I wish.

I don't know, anymore longer what is going, but I can assure you that v.2.3.x IE Tab Plus is compatible with FF5.0. It is the version which worked for me. But, interestingly, the same version is not compatible with Seamonkey 2.2 beta, which is based on FF 5.
As for IE Tab Classic, it is a Chrome extention. I, just, downloaded, again Chrome, and will try again.

I'm using Chrome myself right now, Fulvio. FF5 crashed on me this morning... froze my machine up so tight I couldn't do a thing.

I know we all browse differently. Heck... my wife and I don't use our computers the same way! LOL

Anyway... I like to sync my bookmarks across all my computers and the browsers I use so it's essentially the same experience. What I'm consistently finding is that Firefox just does not give the same experience as Chrome no matter how I try to cut it. Chrome is simply a faster, more flexible browser for me (at least at this time). I wish it were different but until Mozilla changes things, I'm going to stick with Chrome.

I tried Chrome, again, and could not get it going. I got a shortcut, and at the end of the installation a popup to welcome me to Chrome,...and also tell me that it had some problem with the profile.
I could learn no more than that. I went to uninstall Chrome, and my add/remove told me that it was 166 MB in size. What kind of monster do I have?

I tried again, and installed it. I don't remember that it was such a pain to get extentions, so I will do without them.
I imported my Firefox5 settings. When it is all set and done it is 186 MB.
The install location faked me out, I never knew where [url=C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Local Settings\Application Data\Google]they had hidden it[/url]

Installing extensions is about as easy as one could possibly want. I mean, how much easier can it be than... click Install and voila... you have another extension up and working. If your thing is to install a different skin (and I'm partial to darker skins), it's a snap. With the Extension manager I can immediately see all of my extensions via a button on the top right hand side without having to go through the Wrench icon. Seriously, this browser is about as easy and idiot-proof as they make them.

As for uninstalling, use Revo Uninstaller and it will clean up after Chrome's installer. Nothing could be simpler.

I've also run into a few shopping sites that don't play well with FF 5. I use Opera for those.

For my needs, Iron is better than Chrome, less mailing home to mother Google.

Chemically, I disagree. Otherwise, what is Iron? K-meleon? I used to have K-meleon, but it has not been seriously updated. But, on the other hand there are people who, steadfastly, stick with Netscape 7.
Other than the propensity to logoff sites, without my request, I have been doing fine with FF 5.
I am testing 6 beta whatever. And, other than the fact that it does not let me know which beta it is, it works well, also. Oh, surprise! I go to Update history, and I find that Update failed. Aren't they nice?
A nice download works. They give only the date, not the beta1, 2 or whatever. The new one is 7/13/11. Much better than the 20100101! It sure took a while to get it, though.

SRWare Iron is Chromium with a couple of minor adjustments. I was running it for a while, but I decided that it doesn't update its Mac version frequently enough. It appears that it updates its Windows and Linux versions with reasonable frequency.

I don't think Chrome phones home as much as it used to, but I've had trouble determining exactly what it does. The browser changes so frequently that when I do find information, there's a good chance that it's out of date.

I've been running Chromium (two of them, actually). That's the open source base that's the core of Chrome and other similar browsers (e.g. Iron, Rockmelt). For the most part, Chromium is identical to Chrome. The main differences I see are that you get better control over updates (I accept them anyway) and that phoning home isn't an issue.

If the posted version is out of date, you can simply run the updater. I'm not sure where to get Chromium for Windows and Linux.
