Issues with Netscape 7

Postby Pharmer » Fri 04 Oct, 2002 10:15 am

Having recently installed the new Netscape 7, I have found two issues that I wonder if anyone can resolve.
1. My newsreader continually asks me to reenter my ID and password. This is a real pain! In any given session, I have to enter them several times even though I check the "remember" boxes in the two pop-up windows. Is there a fix for this?
2. Many larger newsgroup files are posted in multiple parts (large images, videos, etc.). In IE 5.5, you can choose all of the parts and the program will combine them. Is there such a feature in Netscape 7 or a plug-in which will do this quickly and transparently?

1. Do you have your password manager on?
2. I am not sure what you are talking about.

Thanks for the reply.
1. Yes, I think it's on and it works fine with other Netscape passwords. (I don't know how to turn it off!) It just doesn't seem to work well at all with Newsgroups. I keep reentering the ID and password and find that I have 5 or 10 of the same entry in the password manager.

2. For example, if an .avi video is posted in a newsgroup, it is usually split into multiple files to keep the size of each posting down. Before you can view them, they must be combined into one file. IE5.5 lets you highlite all of the files and, by right clicking on the group of files, you can select "Combine" which combines them into one file. I can't figure out how to do this in Netscape 7.

Pharmer, I have the same problems with the newsgroups. Its gotten so frustrating that I have begun to use Outlook Express for my newsgroups access. This will not lead me to yank out Netscape 7 because I absolutely love Netscape 7, bugs and all. However, with the newsgroups in Netscape being hard to use because of the "password boomerang" (it keeps coming back again and again to ask), I wouldnt be surprised if I end up being bald within a few months (Just kidding!) :D

To disable password manager,
Edit | Preferences | Privacy and Security | Passwords, unselect "Remember Passwords".
Also, from Tools | Password Manager | Log out

I guess you have "view attachement as inline" on.
(Sorry, I don't know how to turn it off in Netscape 7 Mail/Newsgroup).

Hey.,....I found out something and have to ask you: Do you have your cookies disabled in the newsgroups? Maybe this is causing yours and my problem concerning Netscape keeping asking for passwords in the newsgroups. Just an idea.

Looks like that was the reason. I did some testing (closing and opening and going back to newsgroups). It used to ask me everytime for my password and username. Guess what??? It no longer bugs me. Now I can use Netscape 7 and its Mail and Newsgroups and dont have to go back to Outlook Express.

Good, was it cookie or password manager?

When Netscape was installed, the Newsgroups cookies were disabled. Now that I have the cookies enabled, it doesnt bother me anymores.

Weemer917, I think you solved the problem. I enabled Mail/Newsgroup cookies and I haven't been pestered for a password yet. Thanks! :D :D :D
And thanks to the rest of you that responded to my post.

Now, anyone have any ideas about my second issue (i.e. combining and decoding newsgroup files)? :?

Youre welcome, Pharmer. Im quite pleased now with the newsgroups and actually it searches better than Outlook, IMHO. I have to be honest...I was scared when Netscape kept asking me for my username and password, at first. I was afraid that I had a trojan horse in my PC, but scanning with Norton took away that fear.

I wish I could help with the second issue you have with Netscape.

This is what the Netscape Help file has to say about viewing attachments:

Viewing and Opening Attachments
If you receive a mail attachment that consists of a file type that Netscape can display (such as graphic files and HTML files), you see the attachment displayed inline (in the body of the message). For other file types, Mail & Newsgroups lets you open the attachment using another application, or you can save the attachment on your hard disk.

To open the attachment, make sure you have a program on your computer that can open files of the same type as the attachment's file format. For example, if you want to open a .DOC file, make sure you have a program on your computer that can open .DOC files.

To open an attachment:

1. Double-click the attachment you want (if there is more than one).

2. In the Downloading dialog box, choose what you want Netscape to do with the attachment:

* If Netscape finds an application on your hard disk that can open the attachment, you can open the attachment using that application. Click "Choose" to use a different application to open the attachment.
* If Netscape can't find an application on your hard disk that can open the attachment, you can save the attachment. You won't be able to open the attachment, but at least you can save it on your hard disk until you can install an application that can open it.
* Click "Advanced" to add a new file type to the list of helper applications. Netscape uses helper applications to determine how different file types are opened by other applications from within Netscape. For more information, see Managing Different File Types.

3. Click OK.

Saving Attachments

To save an attachment:

1. In the right side of the message envelope, under "Attachments," select the attachment that you want to save.
2. Right-click (Control-click on Macintosh) the attachment and choose Save As from the pop-up menu.
3. Choose a filename and location for the attachment on your hard disk and then click OK. Mail & Newsgroups downloads the attachment and saves it to the specified location.

Tip: To save all attachments, right-click the first one in the attachment list, and choose Save All. You can then specify the location where you want all the attachments to be saved.

Ramona,
How do I disable that as in Communicator's Mail/Newsgroup?

Hi Antony,

I don't find that setting, as it was in Communicator. Do you think the Help file is saying that you will view it inline, with no option? Surely not. :?

Antony,

Unfortunately that is exactly what the Help file is saying. You have no option, and it is not available in Netscape 7.0. You will view it inline.
