iTunes for PC

Postby Fulvio » Fri 22 Nov, 2013 2:31 pm

I think that since iTunes is an Apple product, my question fits here.
I have had iTunes as far back as I remember, and purchased a lot of stuff on iTunes. For a while, may be one year or more, I have used iTunes sparingly, but I, faithfully, updated it. Each update, even a minor one takes forever to install. Never has a program like that. But the last one failed twice, going to the bitter end, till I was able to install it from a manual download. No wonder that I, almost stopped using iTunes. I spend most of my time installing it!
For a while, also I saw two identical Apple Mobile Device Support items, and the last installation gave me an error for this item. Should I uninstall one or both items, and then reinstall? Do a clean install, hoping not to lose all the music?
I am getting to the point that I am starting not to care!
By the way, I got no response from Apple.

I guess that it is because I am posting at the wrong place, although I get no response at the Windows newsgroup.
If anyone is there, I tried to remove everything pertaining to Apple and iTunes, except for the library, for the third time. This time I went through the entire painful process, and when I ended the installation, I found myself back at square one. Itunes gave me the same sickening message that it was not installed properly, error 7. I suppose that iTunes can't figure out what to do, and is intent in driving me crazy!
I have gift card money, and can't use it, Unbelievable!
And, should anyone care, only iTunes is messing up.

Fulvio, have you read this page from Apple support regarding error 7 installation attempts? The resolution, according to Apple lies with Microsoft. But first, read through the symptoms and then the resolution for your operating system. Keep us updated. Don't give up.

Not really related to Fulivo's issue, but my iTunes (v11 on OS X 10.8.5) has been crashed quite a fair bit.

I have been doing all sorts of Searches, except for the one listed by James. The time I have wasted has been unbelievable.
I was, possibly, thrown off, because a number of searches referred to Win7, and my issues had been with XP. I guess that everything is possible, except that my previous version was working fine, but, now, even reverting to older versions is no go.
Presently, I am not updating my iTunes on my laptop.
I will give it another shot, tomorrow, or soon, but I am not optimistic.

The truth is, I hardly use it (only for my iPad). I find my music through Pandora and MSN. But I do use the iTunes store occasionally and I know there are problems. I hope Fulvio gets this under control. He's been battling it for a long time now. Must be very frustrating for him.

An update. I used the link provided by James. Basically, it was telling to remove all six items, i.e. iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour(or Nightmare), and the three other Apple items, Update, Support, and Mobile. It took me almost ninety minutes, but everything, including the Registry keys,
Step two dealt with "repairing" Framework 3.5 and 4.0, which, apparently, are used by iTunes. I did not like it, because it seem to involve a rollback. It took half hour, and I could not see any difference in my Add/Remove, where there were over 30 Framework items.
But, I trusted Apple's suggestions, and proceeded to reinstall iTunes. As usual, the program install that dumb Bonjour, and the "Support"
items, and, then I got the usual R6304 error. at some mysterious Common Fil folder, as it happened before.
iTunes would not take my command to cancel, and, hopefully roll back. I had to do a hard shutdown to stop it.
It would not, even, let me restart! After the shutdown, I tried to remove, manually, at least the Framework 4.0 stuff. But, I gave up after one, because it was taking so much time. This morning, Microsoft was giving me five security updates, all for Framework 4.0.
At this point, I am disgusted with Apple. Everything was fine, and had been for years, till I got the security updates, followed by the update to iTunes. A lot of people are having the same issue. How can they provide stuff that is incompatible?
If Apple is using some Microsoft software in PC, they should make sure that their program does not get broken, and not urge updates.
I had my security updates on my laptop, but I will never do an update of an Apple product.
I will, still, try to report the issue, because they don't seem to be aware of the problem (or do they care?)

Wow! What a nightmare. Well, thanks for reporting this. I too will not allow any updates to my iTunes. The truth is, I seldom use it anyway. I'm really sorry the resolution provided by Apple did not work out for you. I can only imagine the frustration of doing all of this only to see the same error. :x

James,
after wasting so much time, I will have time to get some, real, answers. I would not bother with the beast if I did not have money from gift cards. And, today, I was able to burn a CD with my laptop, in iTunes.

I've done a little research but I can't come up with any significantly different answers from what you've already tried. My gut feeling tells me it has something to do with the Microsoft Framework rather than Apple but that is only a guess based upon reading these so-called help files. I'm sorry I couldn't have been of more help. I hope you get it resolved. Must be frustrating. :(

I am sure that it has to do with Framework, but iTunes uses Framework, so either they don't know about the issue, or can't fgure out what's gong on. For now, I will ignore any update requests from Apple.
I will, certainly, let you know if I have an answer.

An update. I succeeded in installing, and opening iTunes, although I have no idea what cause the success. But, I did a few things differently. I had uninstalled all Apple-related programs. I believe six of them, pretty much in the order recommended by the FAQs.
Of course, everyone is supposed to know this! And, I thought that I was only dealing with iTunes and Quicktime, and not everything including the kitchen sink. As an aside, Apple does not allow installation of separate components, other than standalone Quicktime.
So, I, first, and against recommendations, I installed standalone Quicktime, to see if it would work. It did.
Then, iTunes. The last few times, there was no problem, until I tried to open Quicktime, so did not select to launch it, ending the installation. One recommendation was to start iTunes in Safe Mose, using Shift+Cntrl. They say that if it launched, then it should be restarted. If it would not launch in Safe Mode, lots of luck. But, it did launch. I restarted it, and it worked.
After changing my settings to allow Home Sharing, necessary since I had done a few downloads on my laptop, I tried to play one of the albums. And, I came to a grinding halt. I was told that Iwas not authorized to play the first song. So, I loggrd in the umpteenth time, and I was told that my computer was, already, authorize. But, nothing happened.
Only later, I found out that I could play all other songs. I, vaguely, remembered that although I had downloaded all ten songs on my laptop iTumes, the first one was not in the library. I will have to see what happens on my laptop. Honestly, I don't care. It is not worth the effort, and the song is, already burnt on a CD. So, I have it, no matter how hard iTunes is trying to confuse me.
But, never again will I become a slave of a stupid program.

It is funny, and that was the reply I got from Apple Support, after I sent a feedback.
