Java is still alive in Mac OS X

Apple's recent announcement to Developers that it won't be supporting the Java runtime environment in future versions of Mac OS X lead to some concerns that Mac users would no longer be able to take advantage of Java-based applications. Today, Oracle and Apple announced the OpenJDK project for Mac OS X.

Apple will contribute most of the key components, tools and technology required for a Java SE 7 implementation on Mac OS X, including a 32-bit and 64-bit HotSpot-based Java virtual machine, class libraries, a networking stack and the foundation for a new graphical client. OpenJDK will make Apple’s Java technology available to open source developers so they can access and contribute to the effort.

Apple also confirmed that Java SE 6 will continue to be available from Apple for Mac OS X Snow Leopard® and the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion. Java SE 7 and future versions of Java for Mac OS X will be available from Oracle.

The Java platform was developed by Sun Microsystems in the early 1990s, and Sun was acquired by Oracle in January 2010.

I've dumped Java months ago when my stepson advised it was more problematic than anything else. Now I see Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte also advise uninstalling it. I don't seem to have suffered any ill effects, Antony, from not having Java installed on my computer.

To average home users, I would say that Java platform is not really needed. Hardly any popular end-user applications are written in Java, and the (slow-ish) Java Applet has lost its shine over the web pages.

Java (application) itself is fast contrary to average user's experience with Java Applets.

Two areas that I can think of where Java is still needed: webinar (web conference) and may be needed for controlling certain hardware (e.g. firmware updating of printers).
