Just Upgraded to Netscape 7 - Have one question

Postby ohgal » Sun 08 Sep, 2002 1:30 pm

When I turn my computer on and my windows desktop comes up, I also get a Netscape screen (picture or whatever it is called) as though the browser is trying to launch. It also generates a dialog box so that I can connect to the internet.

I have looked everywhere trying to figure out how to turn this automatic launch thing off, but cannot for the life of me find it.

Can someone give me some instructions (in layman terms?) I'm not real adept at messing around with the files on my compter. I'm running Windows 98 SE if this helps you. :?:

I just happened to find this forum while doing a search this morning so I' m taking that as a good sign!

Thank you in advance - I really appreciate any help you can give.

Welcome to the Forum, ohgal!

Hi ohgal,

Netscape's auto launch is most likely attributed to a "call home" feature in another program. Check your configuration for RealPlayer, WinAmp, AIM, Windows MediaPlayer, etc. Sounds as if one, or all, are configured to open on startup, and that could be what triggers Netscape.

Ramona :D

EDIT: 1:58 P.M.

You might also check your MSCONFIG and see what programs are in your Startup:

Start|Run
Type in msconfig

Look in your Start|Settings|Control Panel|Internet Options
Click on the Connections Tab

You have three choices:

Never Dial a connection
Dial whenever a network connection is not present
Always dial my default connection

Which option have you enabled?

I had the same problem. Go to Start->Run and type in msconfig then select OK. Select the Startup tab and then uncheck any boxes that have Netscape in the title.

I found my fix in the msconfig you suggested. Turns out it was something called Mozilla Quick Start.

Thanks again folks :D

That can be disabled from within Netscape.

Edit -> Preferences

Select "Advanced"

uncheck "Enable Quick Launch" (or similar, I haven't used the Windows version in a long time)

Actually, the reason why Netscape 7.0 is starting up automatically when
your Windows OS is started, is due to a particular preference in the AIM
component of the Netscape 7.0 package. It's the AIM component that's
set to start automatically by default on system startup, so you need to
disable this. While Netscape 7.0 is running, go to Edit - Preferences,
and select the Instant Messenger item in the pane on the left hand
side of the Preferences window. You should then see, at the top of
the Prefs window, a checkbox labelled "Launch automatically at
system start". This box is, rather annoyingly, checked by default.
Uncheck this box, and Netscape will not start the AIM component
on system startup, and in turn, will no longer prompt you to dial out
your net connection, until you start Netscape 7.0, when you want to.

Auto Dialing

Postby dalepbaker » Wed 16 Oct, 2002 11:43 am

This that stupid Instant Messenger auto loading at windows startup and trying to logon. Just disable the auto start when windows starts,so then you will have to manually start instant messenger.

Maybe you should check your settings in Start menu and Quick Launch Bar.
Also is possible that some settings from Windows Messenger were left behind or been changed.
