Last Patch Tuesday for Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2

Postby James » Fri 09 Jul, 2010 9:19 am

Microsoft published the Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification for July 2010--revealing a relatively light month for patching. This coming Patch Tuesday will have only four security bulletins, but it's a crucial day for many IT administrators, as it also marks the end of Microsoft support for Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2.

As long as Microsoft is still supporting Windows XP SP3, majority of Windows XP legitimate should be fine.

Windows 2000 was, well, a pretty good Windows at its time.

Windows 2000 was so good, in fact, that I primarily used it until last year. Windows 2000 was the best version of Windows, ever. Scratch that, Windows 2000 is the best version of Windows ever. If I didn't need to use a newer version of Windows, I'd still use good ole Windows 2000. Microsoft's dropping support of 2K isn't as big of a deal as when they dropped support for 98/ME 4 years ago. 2K/NT is far more secure than any version of Windows 9x. If you don't do anything stupid and use some form of anti-virus (be it real time or on-demand) and use a superior browser than IE6, I'm sure Windows 2000 will still be kicking in 10 years.

I agree with this. Windows 2000 moved the stable Windows NT codebase into the 21st century and added basically all the Windows 9x multimedia features that had been lacking in NT (DirectX etc.). It was stable as a rock and was very light on resource usage making it great for older computers. With over a decade of support, there's no doubt at all that Windows 2000 had a terrific long lifespan.

As for the other issue, XP SP3 has been out for over two years now, so I don't see any problem with Microsoft ending support for SP2. SP3 still has a few years of support yet, so XP users are fine for quite a long time to come.

Does anyone know if SP3 requires an upgrade to IE 8? Because it'd be nice if my school was forced to upgrade from IE 7.

SP3 maintains whatever IE version is on the machine at the time. If you have an SP2 install with IE7 (or even IE6), then you'll get an SP3 install with IE7/6.

Damn. Looks like they'll still be using a mix of 6/7. Which is annoying, because a lot of websites don't render properly.

Oh, and farewell to Windows 2000. You will be greatly missed.

Windows 2000 was certainly a vast improvement over it's NT4 predecessor, but it certainly didn't move
the NT codebase into the 21st Century - unless they'd released it almost a year later as Windows 2001.

Still ... as of today ... Windows 2000 is officially dead.

I wonder what our somewhat deluded old friend Wellander would say with his network of 27 computers
running Windows 2000. It wouldn't matter to him, since he never did believe in "sucrity uppdats" ... !

Would he be "comcrened" about the demise of his favourite operating system? Nahh, I doubt it!

Hi,

I am very saddened to here that Microsoft Windows Two-Thousand is no longer supported.
Windows 20000 was my favourite version on Windows, which was run on all my my compouters.
But this lack of security updates will not effect me because I do not believe in them, nor do I believe in anti-virus.
I am not too comcrened because I administerate all of my own computer systems on my netowkr, thus I can control them all by myself with-out any suppoft from Micro-Soft.

TAHNK YUO,
BEANBOY89.

Not quite enough grammatical errors in that to be pure unmitigated Wellander-esque . . .

Hi,

Im verry saddled to here that Micrsooft Widnows Twothousand is no longer suproroted.
Windwos 200 was my faavrite verizon ovf Widnwos, which wos run on al my my compouters.
But this lock of sucruityy updaets willnt effetc me becuse I donut beleiive in them,
nor doI beliive in anit-viris.
Im not tooo comcreend because I adminsterate all of my own cumpoter sytsems on my netowkr,
thus I cant control theem all by mesylf with-otu an supposot from Microfist.
