I have decided in a last stitch effort to get off of Windows, I am going to do a dual boot of Ubuntu, Mandriva and Windows, and see which one I prefer.

I'll post results as I have them here.

You're probably going to go back to Windows. One word: compatibility. GIMP is in no way a competitor to Photoshop (or even Photoshop Elements). OpenOffice.org, however is. And, WINE's good, but it isn't good enough.(1440x900/706kb)

I've tried *BSD,Ubuntu,Debian,Slackware,Fedora. And of them all, Debian and Slackware came closest. I've even contemplated OSx86 (buying an OSX v10.5 license, of course), but Windows has been there, time and time again.

I have tried it before, and went back to windows. I mean, I really want to make the switch. Oh, and you're right about Photoshop, but I have successfully gotten CS4 to run under Wine before.

To me, UNIX-likes are good for:
* Servers
* Geek projects
* Home users without demanding tastes (eg: Photoshop, games, etc)

But of course that may change. I'm not saying UNIX-likes are not capable of Photoshop-like apps or video games (Doom 3 anyone?). They need more market share. But for those of us who need those apps, or have lower end machines, and need the most their machines can dish out, Windows is for us.

Most of the claims of "enhanced" stability went out with the death of 9x (and even then, 9x was fairly stable if you used decent drivers and decent apps, far better than classic MacOS).

I guess for now, I'll just stick with Windows. When I got to college, however, I will be switching to Mac.

The same reason I can't switch to Mac OS X, is why I can't switch to Linux, FreeBSD (or any of the *NIX variants), OS/2, or even Haiku (OSS BeOS clone). Games. If open source games were higher quality, or if closed source games were available on more platforms, it'd be great.

Well, the only games I play are The Sims 1/2 and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Which, I have not honestly played either of the two in over a year.

Going to try Mandriva...again.

Postby iJohnE » Wed 25 Mar, 2009 11:15 am

Well, when I get home, I will be trying to install Mandriva again. Hopefully, the next time I post it will be from Mandriva.

I've yet to play Anniversary. Is it good? And I hear that it isn't all that big on system requirements (P3 1.4GHz/256MB RAM/GeForce 3 Ti). Plus, I heard that TR:A works decently in WINE.

Yes, it was quite nice.
Beat it in two days I believe (of course that is no-sleep, just playing).

In the original TR1, when I first played it on the PSX, I had trouble with the level where her guns got taken away. When I played the PC version recently, I had no trouble with the game. Finished it, in I believe, 11 hours of cola induced game play!

Yup. Though last time I played it, it was on the PC. And, to stay on topic, I really can't switch to Linux: development tools. (I can't develop Windows tools on Linux, you know). Plus, the open source dev tools Eclipse and NetBeans aren't as good as Microsoft's VS.
