Link IE with Netscape Messenger

Postby seb » Mon 16 Feb, 2004 9:29 am

I define Internet Explorer like my default navigator (and every know solutions). On when i use Messenger and when click on HTTP link, it's always Netscape Navigator wich use to open the HTML Page. Is someone know where à can find a documentation for configuring the file PREFS.JS.
Perhaps i can find on spécifique option to open an external browser like IE.

Thank you for your helps.

Welcome to the Forum, seb!

To be certain that I am understanding you:
• Internet Explorer is your default browser
• You want Internet Explorer to open when clicking on a link in Netscape Mail

If I understand you correctly, then you can add this script to your prefs.js file:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.external.http", true);

Copy the above line, and paste it at the bottom of the prefs.js file, making it the last line.

To open the prefs.js file:
Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad
Click on: File | Open
Navigate to the prefs.js file

Your prefs.js file will be located here:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\username

Ensure that Netscape is closed when you edit prefs.js. Back up the file before editing, or better yet, the entire Users folder.

Netscape Navigator 4.08

On the flip side, if all you've downloaded is Navigator, can you set it up to use with an external email client?

The "Send Page" under File is grayed out. I'd like to be able to use it to send via Outlook.

Hi,
No If you get the navigator standalone clicking on e-mail adresses will do nothing.
It will be broken.

:(

I've tried the approach Ramona suggested, but this does not seem to work.
I have got the communicator V 4.7 (navigator & Messenger) installed.

What could be the problem? Anny suggestions?

Upgrading to a newer release is not an option.

Thx,
Stef

Stef,

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools | Internet Options | Programs
Does the "E-mail" field show Netscape Messenger? If not click on the arrow for the drop down menu and select Netscape Messenger.

Still does not work :?

IE is set as default Browser
Messenger is set as E-mail prg in IE
I have added user_pref("network.protocol-handler.external.http", true); to the prefs.js file

And still, when I klick on a link in an email msg in NS Messenger, Navigator opens, and not IE.

Are you sure you got this working with comunicator 4.7????

Thx for the effort.

Stef,

To answer your question; I haven't used Netscape Communicator in quite a few years, and have never used Internet Explorer.

Do this now: remove the script/line from the prefs.js file. Then In My Computer, click Options (or Folder Options) on the View menu, and then click File Types.

Click the URL:MailToProtocol line to select it, click Edit, click Open in the Actions box, and then click Edit. The command line that controls the program that is used to open a MailTo Uniform Resource Locator (URL) appears in the Application Used To Perform Action box.

Now check the following registry keys:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Your_Mail_Client_Name
Define the client and the path to the program to be started by Internet Explorer:

Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Your_Mail_Client_Name\shell\open\command

Value: "C:\Program Files\Your Folder Name\YOUR_MAIL_CLIENT_NAME.EXE"
