Locate a file in a hidden temporary folder

Postby psikey1700 » Tue 20 Nov, 2007 11:00 pm

I downloaded an Excel file last night (Nov 19) from email and forgot to save it in a locatable place. I worked on the file for 3 hrs last night, then went to access it this a.m. and it wasn't there. I've done a search in every way I know how (not that that's much) and I can't find the file I worked on.

Apparently I was working/saving the file in one of those temporary folders.

Can anyone tell me how to find the file? I can redo the work but I really don't want to!

Thanks.

No guarantees, but poke around in this area with Explorer (not IE) -
C:\Documents and Settings\user-id\Local Settings\Temp
(and) \Temporary Internet Files
Use whatever indicia you can recall, such as: the file's name, or type (XLS), or date.

Recall that you'll have to set your Folder Options to View Hidden stuff.

You might even find a shortcut to your file in the ...\user-id\My Recent Documents
folder. Note that there likely are many more entries here than are shown from
Start > My Recent Documents

Thank you so much! I found it in the Temporary Internet Folders file. It was about 40 min off but I didn't even care!

You saved me a lot of work!

Thanks,
Elaine

I have made a point to give a recognizable name to all file ( and the proper extention must also be added.
By default, most files end up in My Documents, and it may be a slight chore to track them down, but if the extention is remember, it is not so bad. I make a point to save all renamed files on my Desktop, and then move them to an appropriate folder, usually, on the Desktop. But, I have made my mistakes.
