location of bookmarks.html??

Postby cciaffone » Wed 14 Mar, 2012 10:24 am

Just installed SM 2.7.2 over SM 2.0.11 and had to "import" the bookmarks.html file.

In the past I have always had all my SM profile stuff off on the D: drive
with all my other data so I can periodically cleanse and rebuild the C:
drive.

Question: When importing, does SM 2.7.2 store the bookmarks.html
file somewhere other than where I had it?? If so, where??

The default location of the bookmarks.html file in Windows XP for SeaMonkey 1 is:

C:\Documents & Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt

Where 'xxxxxxxx' is a random eight character string. Since SeaMonkey 2, bookmarks are now stored in 'places.sqlite' in the folder 'xxxxxxxx.default' which is located here:

C:\Documents & Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Dave.

Many thanks. But the bookmarks.html file at that location
is NOT the file being used. Seems like the original bookmarks.html
file on the d: drive might be used even though I "imported" it after
upgrading.

That is why I asked the question.

Be nice to have a sane, sober, and serious bit of information here.

You're welcome.

If you imported the bookmarks.html file from your D drive into SeaMonkey 2.7.2, then it would have been incorporated into the places.sqlite file in the profile for SM 2.7.2, wherever it may be located, and that is what will be being used.

Dave.

And where is the places.sqlite kept? If it's on the C:
drive it's gonna get wiped next time I reload Windows.

But in fact, On my D: drive there are whole bunches of
places.sqlite-x.corrupt files, where -x is a number. What is
all this is aid of?? Shall I delete the .corrupt files????

Hello Chuck,

The default location of the SeaMonkey 2.7.2 profile is on the C drive, here:

C:\Documents & Settings\<Your Windows User Name>\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Places.sqlite is located in the 'xxxxxxxx.default' folder.

To find the location of the folder that SeaMonkey is actually using, in SM mail, go to:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

At the bottom of the dialogue box, there is an entry labelled 'Local directory', that will contain the complete path to the profile that SM 2.7.2 is actually using.

With SM closed rename all other SM profiles, then run SM and see if your bookmarks are still available. I have never moved a SM profile out of the default location, so I'm afraid I can't help you with that, if your bookmarks aren't still available. If they are, all well and good!

But in fact, On my D: drive there are whole bunches of
places.sqlite-x.corrupt files, where -x is a number. What is

I'm not sure what causes the 'corrupt' places.sqlite files but, yes, you can delete them, with SM closed. I would suggest also deleting 'places.sqlite' itself and copying the bookmarks.html file from your SM 2.0.11 profile, into that same folder. When you next run SM, places.sqlite will be re-created and should incorporate into itself, the bookmarks.html file you placed in that folder, so that your bookmarks ought to be available in SM 2.7.2.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Dave.
