Location of Netscape 4x files?

Postby SisterDorothy » Sat 24 Apr, 2004 1:31 pm

I have 3 computers networked and sharing Netscape User folder which is on one of them (fileserver). Because I wanted to install and use free Mailwasher (only works with one computer/one profile), I decided to disconnect the Users network connection and let each one use its own User folder. I THOUGHT I knew what I was doing, but didn't. I assumed that the User profile for Sister A on the fileserver was the one that contained all current information for her, so I copied it over the profile on Sister A's computer......and only then found that the email now in her inbox was very old... :? And her address book was empty.

Someone told me that maybe I could find (on Sister A's computer) backup files for at least the address book, but I don't know where to look. I know that in NS 7 it would be in C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Sister A-- but I can't find any Netscape, Mozilla, or any email files when I look around. Can someone help me, or am I chasing a wild goose with this idea?

thanks a lot for any help...Sister Dorothy

Hello Sister Dorothy,

By default, Netscape Communicator 4.x keeps its user files within the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\(Profile name)\ folder.

Sister,
it is always a good idea to back up the Address Book(s) as .ldif files.
You can find that after opening you Address Book, and selecting, I think File|Export. I say I think because I do not have NS4.x in my new computer.
the .ldif can be save on the hard drive, and then imported into any Netscape version.
As for the Mail, if you Copy the Inbox, you will overwrite the present one, so the old file should be renamed. Olinbox, Archive are good names.
It is a good idea to create new profiles, set up from scratch, and then copy, etc.

Thanks Andrew and also Fulvio....I think I just blew it this time. But I'm learning bit by bit: what I will try to remember from this event is to THINK before I act! Blessings, Sister Dorothy

I do remember once when I had trouble with NS7.1 and reinstalled, I found my old Communicator 4.x profiles in Profile Manager although I had deleted the Users directory years before when NS6 PR1 was released. I am thinking that they might be located somwhere else in addition to the Users folder. (Note that I was using WinME at the time)
