Lost Personal Toolbar 7.0

Postby John N » Fri 06 Dec, 2002 11:55 am

In trying to clean out the standard bookmark folders that comes with the CD, I accidently used SELECT ALL. Not only did I remove all bookmarks but the ability to drag and drop from the location bar to the Personal Toolbar. Reinstalling 7.0 from the CD did not help as it maintained the short list of new bookmarks I added after the total removal. Apparently I have deleted a file that allows URLs to be moved to the Personal Toolbar and it was not picked up on re installation.

Reinstalling will not help because "bookmarks.html" file is part of the Profile, a concept which escapes many. The Profiles are not touched, unless you do something to them. You probably wiped out everything. I am not sure how you did what you did, because there is no "select all" if you used Manage Bookmark. If you used, Edit/Select All, you could fish it all out of the Trash, if not dumped.
Since you have a browser related to Win98, your profile is located in
c:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\your name of profile\xxxx.slt
Opening your "salted" folder, you should see Bookmarks.html file. Single clicking on it, it will tell you the size. If 0 Kb, you have wiped it out, and your only hope is the trash or Bookmarks from NS4.x, which, hopefully, you still have. I will tell you later, if needed, how to get those bookmarks into NS7.0 profile.

restored files from recycle bin

Postby John N » Fri 06 Dec, 2002 7:08 pm

Restored all files from recycle bin to no avail. I found "bookmark" files, but "default" is in all the strings. I wasn't concerned about all the bookmarks I lost, because I periodically print them for record. I was concerned that the drop and drag feature to the Personal Toolbar was lost.

Probably not worth anymore troubleshooting since I am upgrading hardware and will reinstall the operating system and all programs for a clean start.

Strange that you cannot drag and drog. If you have the folder, and you create some new bookmarks, you should be able to have a new Personal Toolbar, unless something else got messed.
This happened to me a while back, when K-Meleon, also derived from the same Gecko engine as Netscape and Mozilla, purloined the contents of my personal toolbar, but no other bookmark. But I was able to reconstruct the P.T.
