Is that a separate distribution of Linux, or just a desktop environment that can be configured on your current one?

LXDE is a desktop environment that runs on top of an existing Linux install. I've been using it on top of very minimal Debian netinstalls ever since Edward showed it to me.

According to this page, there are a few distros with LXDE preloaded that would save you the trouble of installing it.

Okay, so say I had Ubuntu installed, I could install it over top of that?

(I'd prefer not to use U-Lite.)

They have instructions on the top of that page for how to install LXDE on top of Ubuntu.

With a Mandriva Linux installation, LXDE can be installed by launching the Mandriva Control Center, select "Install & Remove Software" on the "Software Management" tab and once the screen appears, select the package task-lxde to install, it will then auto-select all of the required LXDE-related packages and install them.

I have some news.

When Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring is released (currently scheduled for April), the Mandriva Free distribution will also include a Mini image that can be downloaded and burned to a CD or DVD.

This Mini image contains both i586 and x86_64 files, that will install a basic Mandriva Linux system using LXDE as the default desktop environment.

2009 Spring is presently still in Cooker (considered beta), but Alpha 2 has been released for testing. This particular Mini image is also available for downloading, if anyone is interested in installing it.

Here is the article at the Mandriva Wiki regarding Alpha 2. Further down on the page, there are download links. The Mini image has a filename of mandriva-linux-free-2009.1-dual-arch.iso and MD5's are also available, to verify the integrity of the download afterwards.

Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring was released yesterday. See my announcement in this message area. It now has a dual-architecture image that has the LXDE desktop by default. This is something that I and others advocated for (an image with LXDE as the default) and I'm very happy to see Mandriva create it.

There is also a link to screenshots in my post.

It installed perfectly on my laptop, using the GNOME image, then I installed LXDE separately. I'll be using it through the weekend before installing it on my desktop systems.

They're working on lubuntu, a variant of ubuntu - but with the LXDE desktop. Hopefully, it will become an official ubuntu project.

At the moment I am working on an install of Arch Linux on my Dell Dimension 8250. I plan on using LXDE, since this machine at current only has 256MB of ram.

That amount of memory should be fine for LXDE.

I was hesitant to install the LXDE packages for Ubuntu, since on one installation when I installed the XFCE packages, it also (and unexpectedly) changed the branding from ubuntu to xubuntu.

That computer is from hell. Straight up from Microsoft hell.

I cannot get a single Live CD to boot, and Arch wouldn't start back up after the initial install of the desktop environment.

However, I was able to get Ubuntu and LXDE installed.

What I did was install a base system from the ubuntu server image, without the internet services. Then I installed Xorg and the lubuntu-desktop. It's working now. I'm not going to mess with it, and I also now have a whole newfound respect for Ubuntu. The dell is now usable, and is on a modern system.

I am also going to be adding another 512MB of ram to the machine, which should make LXDE fly!

I'll post screenshots and memory usage results later.

Memory usage with only a chromium tab open; notice how low it really is. And even under a stress load (excluding flash, that's a nightmare) it still preforms.

Oh, and it boots faster than my laptop. Which amazes me.

And I really do hope that Canonical sponsors the Lubuntu project; they deserve it. They're doing a lot of great work for an amazing desktop environment on-top of an already amazing Linux distribution. Even if they don't sponsor it money wise, they should at least name it as an official project. Just so it's more readily available.

Sometime during 2008, something changed in the Linux drivers pertaining to SCSI and I had terrible problems getting anything Linux installed on an AMD Athlon (32-bit system). I checked its BIOS settings and discovered that the communications setting between devices was sent to 16-bit, I changed this to 32-bit. Not sure if that will solve the problem, but I had to download and install a version of Ubuntu from 2007 first, then do incremental upgrades to 9.10 and then to 10.04 LTS.
