The communications/ports for MacBook Pro are:
One FireWire 400 port at up to 400 Mbps
Two 480-Mbps USB 2.0 ports
ExpressCard/34 slot

built-in 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme wireless networking (802.11g standard)
built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet

It is interesting to note that the FireWire 800 port is missing. It was previously available on PowerBook 15" and 17" models.

Well, you certainly can run Windows on any of the new Intel based Macs, if you have Virtual PC installed.
But then of course. that's been the case with the PowerPC based G3/G4/G5's for quite a few years now.

The only way to find out if Windows is able to run natively, without any emulator app, on a new Intel
machine would be to actually buy one, insert your Windows 2000/XP install CD, and run the installer.

Mind you, that'd be a very expensive experiment, and it may not be guaranteed to work ... if at all.

The easiest way is to wait for other user reports.

Earlier in the thread, the following was asked . . .

Can you run Windows on (a Mac with) Intel Core Duo processors?

I think this should answer that question . . .

According to BetaNews report, the answer is
“[Apple] would not specifically block the use of Windows on Mac hardware. Instead, limitations in Windows itself will prevent its use on the new MacBook Pro laptop and iMac.â€

I've read somewhere that Windows Server 2003 supports EFI and might run. Plus, you can try WinServer2003 for free for 180 days.

MacBook Pro's battery life has yet to be finalized. The MacBook Pro is the first Apple laptop to feature a Lithium Polymer battery. According to Think Secret (NOTE: a rumour site), Lithium Polymer has been in the iPod for four years.

ComputerWorld has a nice review on the new MacBook Pro, A hands-on look at the new MacBook Pro

... feels and looks just as solid and well built as its aluminum-clad predecessor. The better news is that it outperforms and is better engineered than any G3- or G4-based laptop models Apple has sold.

...

Apple has also learned some lessons from the titanium-clad PowerBook G4 that predates its aluminum models. Owners sometimes complained about poor Wi-Fi reception on the titanium books, so Apple has moved the antenna strip for the Airport card to the inner hinge -- and the covering material for that part of the computer is plastic, not metal. The Bluetooth antenna is on the other side of the laptop, to keep those wireless devices from interfering with each other when the Airport card is using the 802.11b standard.

faster MacBook Pro

Postby Antony » Tue 14 Feb, 2006 10:37 am

According to The Mac Observer report, MacBook Pro is now shipping, and shipping with faster models.

Two 15-inch models are available: a 1.83GHz for US$1,999, and a 2GHz model for $2,499, both using the Intel Core Duo processor. The 1.83GHz model will start shipping next week, and the 2GHz model is shipping this week. People that ordered a MacBook Pro early should start seeing deliveries in the next few days.

Apple has also added a new build-to-order 2.16GHz Core Duo processor option for 2GHz model for an additional $300.

The original MacBook Pro models announced in Macworld San Francisco 2006 were 1.67 GHz for US$1999 and 1.83GHz for US$2499.

The main reason I bought this PowerBook G4 (the one I'm typing on now) was for my graphics and video editing. I would only consider buying these new MacBooks if there was one available with a 17 inch screen (hopefully there may be one in the pipeline). I know Apple have said that the screen on these new laptops is much brighter so you wouldn't need a 17 inch model, but that's beside the point. Until there is a 17 inch one I don't see any reason why I should upgrade (especially when most of my software is going to probably run slower or the same using current Rosseta emulation).
