Mail Shortcut in V 4.78

Postby bftet » Tue 24 Sep, 2002 3:51 pm

I am running netscape version 4.78 and during all that they are doing to it. I have an opinion about what they are doing I was offered the chance to have a shortcut put on the desktop to use in retreiving my mail. I said OK and it was installed and works like a chanp. I have another computer networked to this one and I check my mail using one or the other. Is there a way I can get this short cut on the other one. Like I said it works fine not like the sign in to Web Mail. Enough on that fiasco.

Thanks

Hi bftet,

To place a Mail icon on your networked PC's Desktop:

Start | Programs | Netscape Communicator
Right click on Netscape Messenger
Drag to the Desktop
Select "Creat Shortcut(s) here"

That gets me a shortcut to messenger and I use netscape for my messages so that does not work. I tried navigator and that only got me to netscape.

This short cut was offered and installed by netscape and goes from the desktop straight to the web mail.

Thanks

Hi bftet,

I beg your pardon for the misinformation. I didn't understand that you wanted a shortcut to "WebMail". I'm sorry, but I have no idea how that is accomplished, but I'm certain that someone else who uses WebMail will be able to help you with this problem.

Bftet,

Forgive me if I misunderstand, but what you want is an icon on your desktop that will simply Launch Netscape 4.x and automatically take you to the Netscape Webmail site? IF that is the case, try making a new shortcut on your desktop - context-click anywhere on the desktop, select New >> shortcut) and place the following in the location:

Code: Select all
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe" http://webmail.netscape.com

Keep the quote marks, and make sure there is a space between the last quote mark and the http... part. Also, your path may obviously be different to your Netscape executable, so make sure you type in whatever the right path is.

You will be auto-redirected to whatever the heck the address actually is for webmail now (it seems to change all the time), but the one I typed has always worked for me. Thank God Netscape has the decency to keep it and just forward you to the new site. If this isn't what you wanted, don't blame me, blame your dog...as a matter of fact, kick it! (actually, just post that it isn't what you wanted and correct my misconceptions).

[Edit #2 by Mr. Tinkles - replaced right click with context-click]

Are you sure that you are not thinking about the Webmail in 6/7.
I can create a shortcut to Webmail by dragging the Personal toolbar item on the desktop. Then I click on that, I have to select the username, and then the password, since that username is password protected. It sort of bring me on the sign page, which I have to kick into action. And Webmail does not save the password. It must not be it.

Don't think the 6/7 solution would work with V 4.79 so I did not try it. The solution mr tinkles gave me did work and it made me think and I looked at the properties of the shortcut I had and copied it to this computer and it works fine. It is set to work and does bring up the browser and then the mail. Should have though of that to begin with.

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Bftet,

Just out of curiosity, what is the URI for the link you had at work? Is it indeed http://webmail.netscape.com?

The URL i used on the shortcut was the same one as was installed on the other computer.

http:/ncmail.netscape.com/msglist.adp

I opens netscape and goes straight to webmail. If netscape is active it just goes to Webmail

I had not thought to check and see what the URL was and use it until you made me think of it.

Thanks again.
