Mail Washer and other anti spam software

Postby humpd » Thu 28 Nov, 2002 8:13 pm

Does anyone use a product called MailWasher? It is supposed to block spam and mail you don't want. The Mailwasher site claims it works with NS mail. Are there any other anti spam software programs available that work well?

I use the built in filtering feature.

If set up well, it can do a very good job of removing spam...

Spam

Postby humpd » Thu 28 Nov, 2002 10:42 pm

Hendicins: I checked out the site you gave me. How do I go about setting up a filter? You seem to have the words "spam" and "action" and "delete" within an email address (a from address). I do not know how to set up a filter. I assume you add to the list each time you get a spam email?

I'm in the process of setting up a Mail Filters cheat sheet here. Let me know if it helps at all, and how to improve it.

The cheat sheet is excellent, and although I have been setting up filters for
long time, I can learn a bit from it. But, I have a question about Customize, or if one can trash a spam message, and delete it from Server?
Since, I get mail in different browsers and locations, I prefer to keep messages on server. I may want to delete some messages locally and allow me to download them later. Now, I have to refrain myself from deleting.
Thanks, good job!

I have had experience with Mail Washer, and I gave it a chance twice, and gave up. It does work with Mail set up in Netscape Mail and News. I think that it works with Hotmail, but not with Netscape Webmail.
Basically, you can look at the headers or open and read the mail. If you consider it Spam, you can process it accordingly, and it is supposed to do two things. One is to place the e-mail address in their black list, and secondly it attempts to bounce the message. It never worked. I asked what would happen, if there was a spoofed address, as it is often the case. I was told that I would get a Mailer Daemon. I never got one, so their bouncing seems to be ineffectual. So, I don't care about it. I can do a lot better than that with the NS7 Filters. Right now, I always go to one NS7, set up with all my accounts and filters, do my job, and make sure that the message is off the server. Then, I can safely go into my other browsers, and not have to worry about any junk mail.

Messages moved by filters are deleted from the server, which is why you should use move to trash instead of delete (because delete doesn't delete from server, see bug reference). I don't know if this still applies if you don't select "delete messages from server when deleted locally", because I do select it.

I keep messages on server myself, aside from what I filter out (I don't need to read my bugmail from multiple locations, for example).

Netscape's mail filter

Postby Antony » Fri 29 Nov, 2002 7:28 pm

Netscape's Mail filter has been out since Communicator, and here were JavaScript controllable filters (more comprehensive than controlling from Message Filter/Preference).

I wonder if there still possible controllable by JavaScript directly.
Netscape 7's message filter does show the improvements over Communicator.

Well, if one wanted to try Mailwasher for themselves where would they find it?

Mailwasher

Postby humpd » Fri 29 Nov, 2002 11:04 pm

You can find Mailwasher at Cnet.com > Downloads > type in the name of the program (mailwasher) and search in "downloads" and it will come up. There you will find a review of the software and a download link. Good luck.
