malware in your computer may cost your job

Postby Antony » Sat 21 Jun, 2008 1:11 am

Here's a story about a guy called Michael Fiola, he lost his job because the Microsoft SMS (System Management Server) in his work-issued laptop was not functioning. (The Microsoft software that used to keep his laptop up to date was not working.) Which results child pornography being downloaded onto his laptop, and he was fired for breaching computer-usage policy. He then spent more than one year fighting against the criminal charges.

A forensic investigator found that his PC was heavily infected with malware, likely the cause of the damaging files found on his computer by his company.

The good news was that the case against him was dropped at the end.

Here's the story:
A misconfigured laptop; a wrecked life (Computerworld, 18 June 2008)

Having malicious software on your computer can result serious impacts.

Just mind-boggling, Antony. And it really makes me angry given the fact that our IT person will not update our AV, will not give me the password so that I can uninstall our "old" Trend Micro program and install a new free one from Comodo. I suppose he thinks he's protecting his turf. And we also have to go online throughout the day looking for customer requests. I'm saving this article of yours. Thanks.

James,

Sorry to hear that your IT admin is not very co-operate on virus/malware prevention.
Try asking another colleague if he or she can talk to the IT guy better.
Otherwise, try to keep an eye on your computer's (not-so-visible) activities.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought of approaching the operations' manager about this. Good idea.
