Managing Plug-Ins NS 7.01

Postby QuarterMaster » Sat 28 Dec, 2002 2:48 pm

I've just recently loaded the SillyDog Stand-Alone version of NS 7.01.

I've noticed that when I go to "Help" and then "About Plug-ins" I see that
there are duplicate entries for JAVA and Shockwave Flash. The JAVA
version(s) that show up are...... Java Plug-in 1.3.1_04. As for ShockWave
I have two versions listed....... Shockwave Flash 6.0 r47 and 6.0 r65.
Not sure how this came about. I did load NS 7.01 along with a NS 4.75
still active on my system.

My question is this, How to best manage these multiple entries. Can I
just delete the .dll files of the older versions for ShockWave and for JAVA
just install the newer version. Perhaps there is a better way, like maybe
a third party program, or something I have yet to discover within NS.

Any Help Vastly Appreciated.

Netscape 7.01 will automatically use any plugins installed for previous Netscaps. That is if you have NS4.x, NS6.x (both installed in different folder than Netscape 7.01), then Netscape 7.x will user its plugin folder first then search for NS6's and so on.
You can remove plugins files from Netscape 6's and Communicator's plugin subfolders. OR simply creating a folder called pluginNotUsed alongside plugin and move those files to that folder.

Netscape 7.01 is scanning your Netscape 4.x plugins folder, and finding plugins in there (this is why they appear twice in about:plugins under 7.01).

To disable this, add the following line to your Netscape 7.01's prefs.js:

user_pref("plugin.scan.4xPluginFolder", false);

This will save messing around with your 4.x installation. You can copy any plugins that are missing from 7.01 to it's plugins folder after doing this.

Thanks!!! That's a very good tip. I already dealt with the problem I was
having by deleting some of the older plugins. I still do use NS 4.75 from
time to time, So I will change the entry in the prefs.js file.
