From http://www.mandriva.com/en/community/ne ... 007_is_out :

The key innovation of Mandriva Linux 2007 is the spectacular AIGLX and Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop.

In addition, a new theme named Ia Ora ('hello' in French Polynesian) has been introduced.

To match everyone's needs, Mandriva Linux 2007 includes the latest innovations in the fields of office suite applications, Internet, multimedia and the new virtualization and 3D-accelerated desktop technologies.

I'm downloading the CD images now, but it looks like there are only a few mirrors for the x86_64 CD images yet (the closest two to where I am are ale.org and usherbrooke.ca), and so far I haven't found any mirror carrying the dual-architecture DVD image.

As it was released on Tuesda, once the BitTorrent traffic subsides, then the software will be available on the mirrors. I was able to download it from one of the mirrors in France last night.

There is a major improvement over Mandriva Linux 2006. I had Mandriva Linux 2006 Free installed on both computers and with the 2006 version, I had to tweak a couple of things and disable others at startup, to get it to run faster on the 166 MHz Intel Pentium system. With 2007 installed as a new install (not an upgrade), I have not had to change anything at all, and it's running faster than 2006 did.

I am very happy with this! :)

Worth noting: Even though I did a clean install, if you use SeaMonkey, it requires the installation of the libstdc++.so.5 libraries in order to install and/or run. I installed this via a Konsole window as root:

Code: Select all
urpmi libstdc++.so.5

will install this library.

I also had to install NTP in order to use NTP:

Code: Select all
urpmi ntp

will display a message that it will also install ntp-client, which is what it should do.

The Home desktop shortcut did not install by default, but that was easily remedied by right-clicking the desltop, selecting Create New, selecting Link to Location (URL) and then typed in the path to my home directory.

I got the four x86_64 ISOs downloaded earlier today. Everything looks pretty good, except for a few minor bugs that I'm sure can be worked out (more specifically, I can't get the 3D-accelerated desktop to work even after installing ATI's drivers, and my wireless card shows up as a wired Ethernet card).

One thing's for sure, though: this is fast. It boots up in a quarter of the time that 2006 x86_64 did, and in half the time XP64 takes. If anybody's interested, and I'm probably I'm risking this not playing in a certain media player since I haven't tested it, here's an MPEG-4 of XP64, Mandriva 2006, and Mandriva 2007 booting up.
