Mandriva Linux

Postby Edward » Tue 13 Jun, 2006 2:19 pm

I had some problems with SuSE 10.1 on my Pentium, so I decided to try out Mandriva Linux Free.

It is great being able to install what I want (no servers!) instead of the installation program installing what it thinks you want and I did not have to reformat my /home partition so everything that was in there (including my SeaMonkey installation) should be intact.

This took 45 minutes to install on my Pentium (166 MHz!) system, as opposed to the 3 1/2 hours that SuSE took and if it runs just as fast as it installed, then I think Mandriva will have converted me to their Linux. :)

The installation was really fast, faster than installing Windows.

I like it so much, I got rid of SUSE on my AMD system and replaced it with Mandriva. Base installation on my AMD system: 20 minutes. :)

I also discovered that if I turn off the swap on my slower system, the system will run somewhat faster.

As an example, printing now takes roughly 1/2 the time than before.

I eventually installed Mandriva Linux 2007 One (which comes on one CD) on the Pentium and had a working system just as quickly.

Compared to Mandriva Linux 2007 Free (which comes on 4 CD's), the menu structure with One is a lot simpler (not as many levels), it does not include as much software as Free (I had to download and install two small packages that I normally use), it can also run as a live CD without actually installing it to the hard drive, but there is a selection on the desktop to install One to the hard drive and the default colors in One are orange.

Every other Linux distro I've tried (including Free) has been blue, it is nice to see a different default color for a change. :)

Mandriva Linux 2007 One can be downloaded here.

I've mainly used Fedora since ditching Suse.

It's a shame, Suse could be great if they got rid of YAST2.

I don't think SuSE will ever get rid of YaST.
