Merge Contacts

Postby James » Tue 06 Sep, 2011 11:06 am

In my new install of SM, I have in my Address Bk a Contacts 1, Contacts 2, Suggested Contacts, OE Contacts, Suggested Contacts and Collected Addresses. Is there any way to merge these into one address book so that duplicates do not exist?

Is this a question of multiple Address Books, or multiple Address Lists, or both?

In Thunderbird, one can drag-and-drop names between Address Books.
A List can contain only names that are in the parent Book.

Does SM work the same?

Also see the first paragraph of the somewhat garrulous 31 Aug (presently bottom) post here.

Thanks, Paul. I'll take a look.

Dragging and dropping from one list to the next seemed to work just fine, Paul. Thanks for the tip.

Caution here, assuming that there are multiple Address Books involved -
When one copies from one List, into a List in another Book, the action that occurs is that the selected Name(s) is/are copied to the other Book, and the target List is updated.
Result - duplication of the Name(s), in multiple Books - the problem that your were trying to avoid.
Set up a test: create dummy Address Books and entries and Lists, and drag/drop around.

They weren't multiple address books.... they were multiple contact lists. I simply chose one list to keep and merged the other two into it then deleted them. This now became my one and only address book and it works just fine. Again, thanks for the tip. It's deceptively easy and therefore wouldn't have occurred to me.

The fact is: I'm still not sold on SeaMonkey so what happens here is of relatively little import. My default e-mail client is Outlook. It is simply the best (in my view) and the one we use at my place of employment. I tried T-bird and it was okay but in truth, I never really cottened to it. Since I occasionally use SM, I thought I might as well activate the mail portion and it works fine. But as I mentioned, I doubt I will make much use of it other than on a periodic basis.
