Merging old files with new

Postby lonestarone » Sat 14 Dec, 2002 8:00 pm

Greetings-All,
Up and running for a week or so on NS7. If all works this well, I'm so very
thankful!! Love NS7 - no pop ups - no problems (so far.)
Now-comes the real problem. Just installed my old HD in new computer as
slave, so I could work my old files, was the idea. OK - they're all there!!
I think! XP lists them differently than the old system did. Is this as good as
it's going to be? I've tried to merge mail but XP won't recognize it. Keeps
asking what program to open? Well, I'm assuming NS the old version? Then, it insists on creating a new profile, etc. That's caused me problems in the past - losing all my mail completely. So I'm no doing that. All text files
simple drag and dropped right in to their chosen folder, no problems. But, I didn't need NS for that, anyway!!
One thing thats driving me crazy!!!! Nothing to do with NS, but - as I'm typing this text, the cursor stays on the last letter!!! I can't find any where in XP to space it further from the Last character typed. I'ts blinking over the last letter!!! Very annoying!!!
Thanks all (Ramona) for great help during this learning experience.
John in Dallas.

No mail !

Postby lonestarone » Mon 16 Dec, 2002 4:31 pm

Hello--All,
I've done everything I can think of to find my mail folder in7.0 as Ramona
described.
I don't have the same file structure in NS7 as I did in 4.76. There is no
user ID :\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt / according to Ramona's instructions.
I have show all files checked in XP.
I just can't find anywhere in NS7 the above URL.
I have NS one folder then another NS folder///in that folder are chrome,
components, defaults, plugins,res,searchplugins, uninstall.
I've searched all those folders - nothing to lead me to user name and mail
I'm getting my mail - no problems?! I can't figure this out!!?
I'm too tired to worry about today!!!
Thanks All,

Lonestarone,

If you can send/receive mail try the following:

Send yourself an email with a unique subject (e.g. "xyxyxyz" without quotes)

Download email. If everything is working right you should get the email.

close NS.

Set display all files.

Do a file search for *.* containing the unique text string that you had for subject.

This should return the location of your active profile wherever it may be.

Hope this works for ya, it works for me.

I'm not clear as to exactly what your problem is... finding your 4.76 profile on the old HD or the one that NS 7.0 created on the new HD? Making your old HD a slave in a new system shouldn't result in the loss of any data. Although it shouldn't matter, is your new system set up on FAT 32 or NTFS partitions? And how is XP changing how the files are "listed"?

I run W2000, which should be very close to your XP for purposes of this problem. Use search function under the start button... search for your old profile name as well as *.slt If NS put your NS 7.0 default profile in some weird place, that should find it for you. Assuming you can find your old 4.76 profile, you can create a new NS 7.x profile using the 7.0 profile manager. But first, create a new directory for your profilles. That will make finding it easier and quicker to find than expanding the Documents and Settings directory. After your new profile is up and running, you can delete the default NS 7.x profile.

After you create your new NS 7.x profile, open the mail program and set up your new email account(s). Thereafter, you can copy and paste your email files (boxes) from 4.76 into the new mail directory, overwriting the new, but still empty files.

If I haven't understood your issue, please post a clarification. Perhaps I can assist....

I had the same problem when I started using XP, and I did a search and nothing came up. Then, I found out that the entire Application Data was nowhere to be found, although it was there according to path in mail.
Then, someone told me that several files and folders where hidden for your "protection". If you go to your user_name main folder, and "unhide" files, it can found, and, the mozilla/Profile shows up. I do not have XP here, so, if do not know how to do it, check the View tab. Then, everything will start making sense.

Hi-All,
Thanks for such a great web site and HELP when we need it!!
Finally got my old mail files in NS7!! NS sure does hide --or XP -- my user
'info. The wild card search did help -- thanks. The new search function in
XP is VERY confusing til one works with it for awhile!! The *.slt function found nothing. It was really buried in dlbt follder (I don't remember exactly)

Anyway - on to better stuff!!! Love the speed and control of my new NS.
Keep up the great work, please. IE is dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
