Messages gone

OK, I have a new 7.1 problem. The same user as my other thread and another user are having a similar problem. The first (same as other thread) lost ALL of her Netscape messages. There is nothing in her inbox.

The other user has messages in his inbox, but when he opens them, there's nothing there, no header or anything. This includes old messages and new. These are messages sent by legitimate senders (clients, vendors, user's wife, etc.)

Does anyone have any ideas? Both of these problems have happened in the last 24 hours.

Greetings,

If the system has AntiVirus realtime file protection enabled and an email with an infected attachment was received, it's possible that the AntiVirus software has quarantined the inbox.

Rootsman,
correct me if I am wrong. The short answer is that:
The problem may apply if one uses an AntiVirus problem, and have mail scan ning set up.
Can mail scanning be disabled, and the Inbox returned to the Profile, even if renamed?
So, is there mail scanning, and are two different kinds of AV used. It is possible that the one which has partial mail, may be the victim of header corruption. Solution is is to delete the Inbox.msf file, with Netscape closed.

But isn't mail scanning the main reason for AV software? I know if we disabled it, our network would be overrun with viruses!

Netscape 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4 code. This is what the Mozilla 1.4 and Mozilla 1.5 FAQ say about email viruses:

3.6. Is Mozilla 1.4 Messenger susceptible to e-mail viruses?

Mozilla Messenger will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.

JavaScript is switched off by default for mail and news, so an e-mail cannot run script code just by being opened.

As with any mail program, take proper caution before running any file that you receive in e-mail. Appropriate anti-virus software should also help keep you safer.

See the supplementary tutorial on Junk Mail Control for more details.

3.7. Is Mozilla 1.5 Mail & Newsgroup susceptible to e-mail viruses?

Mozilla Mail & Newsgroup will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.
