Microsoft RDP compatible Terminal Services Server for *nix?

Postby Dr Lobster* » Sat 10 Feb, 2007 8:25 am

does anybody know of such a project which aims to implement a Microsoft RDP compatible remote desktop over linux?

i'm playing with the vnc remote desktop now to save me keep plugging a monitor into my fedora box but the performance is pretty poor - usable, but only for admin tasks - you certainly couldn't use it for word processing etc, it just seems to tear too much.

but for anybody who has used microsoft terminal services on windows 2000/2003/xp you'll notice that the experience is pretty seamless, most of the time it's like the application is actually running on the local machine. vnc just doesn't cut it.

I've never used it, but you could try xrdp. To the best of my knowledge it's still in the beta stage.

Remote Desktop Protocol; it's designed to connect to Terminal Services on NT4TS/2000/XP/2003/Vista/etc and display a Windows session over a network. If you're familiar with VNC or Apple's version of Remote Desktop, it's on the same idea as those.

Thanks. So, it's something like Remote Desktop Connection?

Well, (not the answer to Dr Lobster*, but he might want to know about this) there's Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac free from Microsoft MacBU (Macintosh Business Unit). It worked well for me, except I only have a slow Dell PC.

If you're talking about the Windows Remote Desktop Connection, then it and RDP are one in the same. RDP is the name of the protocol that Remote Desktop Connection uses

Terminal Server actually ran alright at 120MHz with 80MB of memory, that's got to be slower than your slow Dell.
