mouse pad?

Postby Antony » Mon 29 Nov, 2010 9:45 am

So what is your mouse pad? Hard plastic? cloth (fabric) surface? or any special mouse pad?

Personally, I prefer fabric (cloth) for only one reason: I don't want to ruin the rubber under the mouse.

What do you use?

I have a Microsoft Wireless Blue Track Explorer Mouse which will run on any surface, Antony. I use the Dell mouse pad that came with my computer. It has a rubber under pad to keep it from sliding as well as a plastic-like slippery surface that allows the mouse to glide freely. This Blue Track will actually track on my pants leg, the carpet... you name it. And I got it dirt cheap: $25 on Amazon.

On a matte black surface at work, I do not need a pad.

At home, on matte white surfaces I do use pads, I do not know of what they are made.

Mice seems to shun glassy surfaces and white surfaces.

I have an old ball mouse, so using it without a mousepad is asking for it. I personally use an old cloth mousepad that was a promotional item from a now-defunct telecom startup in the 90s - it fits with the other old stuff on my desk pretty well. :)

Ever since I started using optical mouse (more than 10 years ago), and now laser mouse, I need a mouse pad. Optical/laser mouse does work on jeans and a piece of paper, but not on my desk, particularly with my glass top Zed Desk.

Currently, I found my mouse pad is a bit too small (23cm x 20.5cm or 9in x 8in). I guess I will need to invest a larger one.

On my wood desk, a mouse-pad is really not necessary. However, I still use one. It's one I got for free, actually, I have two of the same one. It's got cloth on top and a rubber bottom to prevent movement. I use one on my desk and carry on in my laptop bag for when I use external mice.

I use pieces of highly polished marble 2cm thick. I get them from a friend of mine who works in a shop where they make granite counter tops. They are custom cut to fit my desk space. They range in size from 9 by 9 inches to 9 by 12 inches. Generally I use any cheap usb optical mouse that feels comfortable.

I use a cloth mousepad with just about any mouse I have to use, whether it be optical or ball. I need the feeling of a bit of resistance when I'm using my mouse. I can't stand using a mouse without a cloth mousepad; it's way too slippery.

Do you really need a mousepad that big? I don't even have enough space on my desk to fit something like that.

It is not that big. When you have a few different windows opened in different monitors, it gets very annoyed to lift up the mouse a number of times.

It makes working on Photoshop pretty difficult when you have to lift up the mouse often.

It certainly looks big, especially compared to the keyboard next to it, and your mouse.

I still don't see what's so difficult about lifting up your hand once or twice. I've done it for years on two screens and never had an issue.

If you don't insist on using large CRT monitors, you would have plenty of desk space.

Don_HH2K wrote:It certainly looks big, especially compared to the keyboard next to it, and your mouse.
Clearly, the previous mouse pad is far too small.

It's not once or twice, it's way too frequent.

I find the best pointing device to be an optical trackball, so there is no real need for a mouse pad.

I don't "insist" on using a CRT monitor, that's just what I can afford.

Your previous mousepad actually looked like a standard sized one, not a small one. You could also have turned up the mouse sensitivity instead of buying a new, huge mousepad.
