Moving Huge Netscape 7.2 email from PC to a MAC w/Snow Lep

Postby SLCGUY » Tue 22 Sep, 2009 6:12 pm

Hello,

I just purchased a MacBook Pro and am installing Snow Leopard on it now. I really need to move my email from my PC to this box. I have well in excess of 100,000 messages, filed in folders and subfolders, in my Netscape 7.2 on my PC. Does anybody have any idea how I can move my email to my new Mac and keep all the old messages in the right folders and subfolder?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Firstly, when installing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, make sure that you select "Rosetta". I believe Netscape 7.2 (for Mac OS X) is not in Universal Binary.

Install Netscape 7.2 on your Mac, create a user profile with the same profile name if possible. Quit Netscape 7.2 (not just close the Netscape 7.2 window, but Quit it).

The software should create a profile folder under
[tt]~/Library/Mozilla/Profiles/(Netscape profile name)/salted_name[/tt]
Where [tt]~[/tt] denotes your Mac OS X user's folder, i.e. [tt](Macintosh HD) Users/(Mac user name)/[/tt], and [tt]salted_name[/tt] denotes randomly generated letters.

reference: Netscape 6/7 Profile Location

Next, you should copy (or transfer) files under Netscape's profile folder on PC to respective profile folder (above) on Mac.

Launch Netscape 7.2 (on Mac) and see if it works.

If so, quit Netscape 7.2, and I recommend upgrade to Seamonkey for your web browsing and emailing.

Thank you. Generally, I am following you, but when installing Snow Leopard, I did not get the option to select "Rosetta".

In fact, I am rather stuck at the level of this installation. My ablity to connect to various websites has just disappeared when I am in Safari (the only browser on the box right now).

I seem to be able to get to major sites but when I try to go to Apple and download, or other sites, for example to download firefox, it tells me I am not connected to the internet, even though Iknow that I am.

So for the moment, I need to address that, before I can follow your other instructions, which are very much appreciated.

If you click Customise during the installation, you should see the option.

If you do not have Rosetta installed. You can install it in following way,
1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD into your Mac.

2. Open the Optional Installs order.

3. Double-click Optional Installs.mpkg.

4. Select the Rosetta and click Continue, see below:

5. Then follow the on screen instruction.
