Do you by chance have a Soundblaster Live Value! Sound Card? Which Detonator Drivers are you installing?
It could be a conflict between the two, as I experienced that very thing when my Dell was only a couple of days old. Dell gave users a new Driver for the nVidia Graphics Card, and no problem since. Do you get this error:
SoundBlaster Live Value Math Co-processor is not detected.
EMU10K1.VXD cannot be loaded.
