Mozilla will not run on 16 bit Windows.

Netscape Communicator was the last 16bit version of Netscape (even then 4.5 and up are 32bit only I think).

Mozilla runs on these Windows OS's:
WinNT 3.51
WinNT 4
Windows 95
Windows 95 OSR2
Windows 98
Windows 98 SE
Windows Millennium Edition,
Windows 2000
Windows XP

All are 32bit OS. If its an old DX... say a 100mhz or so, if you can get 32mb - 64mb of ram into it, Win95 OSR2 and K-Meleon could be a good bet :)

Netscape's versions for Windows 3.x stopped at Communicator v4.08.

While I am loath to say this, you may actually be better off with Internet Explorer v5.01 for Windows 3.1 instead of Netscape 4.08 since it includes a TCP/IP stack. The only release of Netscape that included a TCP/IP stack was the Dial-Up Trial v3.0 Navigator release.

I'd personally get a copy of Win95 and use that instead. I've run it on a 386 DX/40mhz with 12mb of ram and a 250mb hd - so it should run on this computer.

I also loathe saying this, but MSIE 5.01 for Win3.11 is better than Navigator 4.08 for 3.11, more upto date rendering engine.

Although you guys Might be right on IE 5.01, I am running IE 3.03 , Because it will runs twice as fast as IE 5.01... I tried IE 5.01 and It was just too slow.
Netscape 4.08 it not too bad,But it too is a little slow. I was just wondering about some older versions of netscape... Say 3.0 or up , would they be faster??? Also do these older versions come with java ?? Anyway this is just a second computer to have fun on... :D

3.x suites of browsers are severly out of date, most sites will not appear correctly. You have been warned.

Communicator and IE4+ both ship with their own poor pathetic tainted version of Java, but again you need a 32bit OS to run Sun Java VM.

Relax, most of the time, you will get a sale pitch for a newer version of OS or browser. You should be admired trying to get the old clunkers going, rather than invest into something else. Look at the 3.04 Release Notes (3.04 is the latest, non-4.08). http://wp.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/3.0/ ... -3.04.html
You will see that it has Java SDK 1.0.2.
Good luck.

I'd probably vote IE5/Win16. If nothing else, it's got better standards support than Netscape 4 (not that IE5's support is great, but it's better than Netscape 4!).

Well, if you're content with v3 series, do you want the Dial-Up Trial that I have which includes the TCP/IP stack and dialup support? It also has a local copy of the..er..what was that called...Netscape handbook I think. If you do, just let me know and I'll email it to you, or alternatively, you can poke around SillyDog's FTP site. I think Antony put them up there when I sent them to him, but I'm not going to dig through all the message posts since last summer to find the URL  .

Btw, apologies for trying to steer you to IE501. If you're happy with Netscape v3.x more power to ya (different strokes for different folks I always say!).

This might be interesting as to why there's no builds of seamonkey/NS 6-7 for 16-bit windows or 68K macs:

Q: How come older platforms (Win 3.1.1 and below, Mac OS 8.1 or under) aren't supported?

<Talks about 68K macs...>

Although I don't have specific information, Windows 3.1.1 and below probably face a similar problem as the older versions of the Mac OS: they don't support certain features needed by Netscape 6. The fact that Windows 3.1.1 is a 16-bit program may be another obstacle, since all the platforms that is currently supported by Netscape 6 are all 32-bit operating systems.

The full answer can be found at Newzilla.
