I had the "losing password" problem with Firefox 3.0.2 which was annoying to me.
The bug seems to be gone so far with the new version.

I am not saying that we should nee Roboform-

BUT-

Even though between FF's Password Manager, some sites' cookies (eg, the New York Times), and the bookmarklet password utility, which I use for MyYahoo!, we *should* have everything we need.

Roboform is not free after ten saved user id's. Being incredibly lazy, I have a zillion. So, I bought Roboform. I do not remember the cost; but whatever I paid has been worth it. I also use it on IE7&8, and I copied the install file and the key to use on a second computer.

SeaMonkey has the best utility for saving any and every user id and password. There is a line in about:config, I think "wallet crypto " something. The default is off; but one can toggle it to on and it will save everything.

On firefox 3.03 and this is the second time it has dumped my passwords. It wont even let me save new ones. At this rate I am hunting for an old version of ff2. none of this rubbish with that version, even IF i am on vista!

Are you telling me that if you go into Tools|Options|Security|Saved Password that you see nothing listed? You know that if you delete cookies that you will not have the passwords available? You will have to start from scratch.
As for not wanting to save passwords, I have never seen a case that I see a request to save a passwords, and I say yes, and the password is not saved. Several sites will not even ask, for sake of security. If you want 2.0.17, try the localized downloads. In your case, you want the English-GB.
I suggest that you do a custom install, in a new folder. Then, you will have to create a new profile. It will be a bit of work to do it right, but you cannot expect that the FF3 profile formats which are different for a number of files, be usable with FF2.x.
I have had absolutely no problem with 3.0.3, and have kept 2.0.0.17, each with a different profile.
Remember that one two updates are likely to occur for 2.x, and will have reach end-of-life by the end of the year.

thanks for your reply fulvio. Yes, i am saying that all my passwords yesterday had disappeared, and even for sites where it will remember passwords, it wouldn't. I delete cookies regularly but the passwords remain. HOWEVER, today they're all back... definitely not there yesterday, back today and saving as i type. I shall give creating a new profile a whirl.

I think that the new profile idea is good. There is always something new, and very annoying, happening. If you use a new profile, and it works, make sure that you use that profile.
The profile switch works also for FF.
