mozilla mail gone

Postby thegk » Wed 10 Dec, 2003 8:35 am

So I opened mozilla mail which i have bene using for the past month or so, and it was suddenly blank, that is, it was asking me to create a new profile, and all my saved mail was gone!
I searched my harddrive and in myC:\Documents and Setting\Default\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles
I found that my profile still existed along with a .slt folder, in which there were a bunch of msf files and a bunch of empty (0 kb) file files to match the name of the msf files.
Does this mean that my saved emails still exist?
If so, is there any way for me to retrieve them??

If you tracked down the correct profile, you should be looking for the file with NO extention. They contain the mail. The .msf file are the header files, and , obviously, with no headers, they will 0kb. Look for the Inbox, and, if present, delete the file with the .msf extention. It should be rebuilt properly.

no ext files are 0

Postby thegk » Wed 10 Dec, 2003 1:48 pm

Actually the msf files are 1-3 kb while the matching files with no extension are 0 kb. If I delelte the msf files, will it restore the other files? because pretty much all the files that aren't msf are 0 kbs. and if I once delete the msf files, how do i go about opening the other files (my mozilla has reset itself, should i enter my profile info again?)

correction

Postby thegk » Wed 10 Dec, 2003 2:00 pm

correction to what i wrote in the previous posting,
i found the files with no file extension that actually have my emails, i was able to open them in the mozilla with the additions of a bunch of mumble jumble.
New question: how do i access these files through the mozilla mail client?

problem solved!

Alright, I've successfully retrieved my "lost" emails by copying the files without the extension into my the new profile I've set up.
Thanks Fulvio for your help!

First, delete all inbox files with the .MSF extension. Do this with Mozilla OFF. Next, call up Mozilla mail to see if the inbox contains your saved mail. If it does not, do the following. Create a new profile using a slightly different name than the one you are using nown (DSmith rather than Smith). Go into the .slt file where your inbox is kept from your original profile. Copy the contents of your old INBOX to your new INbox. You might want to back up your inbox, bookmarks, etc. to a temporary backup file just in case there is a problem. Do the same for your bookmarks and then call up Mozilla to see using the new profile to see if all is in order. If everything is like you want it, delete the OLD profile.

Good thing to keep "humpd" suggestions, because the problem may reoccur.
Anyway, to check what is in a certain Inbox file, I right click and Open with Wordpad. At least I know if I have the correct account.
