firefox 1.0.1 security and stability update available
Get it while it's hot. Firefox 1.0.1 update is available. This is a security and stability update so not much in the way of new feautures. <snip>

Thunderbird 1.0.1 and Mozilla 1.7.6 should be coming in the next week or so.

As much as I appreciate what the Mozilla folks do - it's their efforts that bring Mozilla, Thunderbird and Firefox to the masses, wouldn't it make more sense for all products to be released at the same time, instead of having those who use the Mozilla suite, wait for this security upgrade, while Firefox users already have it (in 1.0.1)?

It appears there is a new build of Firefox 1.0.1 now avalable on Mozilla's FTP servers. The file date for the updated Firefox 1.0.1 is [tt]2/26/05[/tt]. Presumably, these new builds are to fix some problems that have sprung up with the original 1.0.1 release.
MozillaZine wrote:Update 3: As noted by Asa in the comments, "If you are experiencing a crash when entering text into the address bar, you can correct the problem by removing the autocomplete.xpt file from your Firefox components directory, for example C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components. To avoid this crash, do not install a new installer build on top of an older zipped build." You can read the rest in his comments below. We expect a new 1.0.1 build to fix this soon.

I have downloaded the updated Firefox 1.0.1 and the UserAgent is now indicating the build date as [tt]Gecko/20050225[/tt] as opposed to [tt]Gecko/20050223[/tt] with the original 1.0.1 release. The new files are avalable from same locations as the original versions.

Not surprising, they probably don't want to issue a fix right after another fix was released just days ago, that doesn't sound too good for them. I remember, NS did this (although being very subtle) with NS 7.2, the original didn't ask for a birthdate, later I reinstalled on Server 2003, and it did. Therefore, we must have had two different versions or something.

See http://www.mozilla.org/seamonkey-transition.html

This is too late, in my opinion. 1.0.1 was released two weeks ago that addressed security issues, meanwhile, they continue to leave the suite (SeaMonkey) users hanging. This is also unacceptable.

There is also "talk" of 1.8 being the last release.

I no longer have a desire to use any Mozilla-released product, preferring to free up the disk space for other applications.

The above are my own personal comments and do not necessarily reflect the views of others.

The Mozilla 1.7.6 update is still planned, it's just delayed a bit.... see:

firefox and thunderbird 1.0.2

We shipped the security update for Firefox 1.0 three weeks ago with the intention of shipping the Thunderbird and Mozilla Suite upates soon after. Well, just as we were getting ready to push out Thunderbird 1.0.1 and Mozilla 1.7.6 releases we came across a couple more issues that needed fixing in all three of our products.

We've shelved the Thunderbird 1.0.1 bits and are hard at work getting Firefox 1.0.2 and Thunderbird 1.0.2 wrapped up and delivered. As soon as that's done, we'll be pushing out the Mozilla 1.7 update too.
