When I click on the check for updates feature in TB, it says there are none available. Is this a completely new build and, if so, do I have to uninstall TB 1.5.0.10 first?

It's generally safe to simply install over the old version of Thunderbird.

I have been testing TB2.0 for long time, and I, finally, installed it in a different folder. I am, also, using a separate profile. Initially, I was having some problem with TB2.0beta not closing, so that I could not open 1.5.0.10 (or whatever I had), but they have minded their business.
However, it should be no problem installing on top, although uninstalling 1.5.0.10 is a better idea, since the profile is not removed.
I like to have both, just in case.

Why doesn't TB see this new TB as an update when I use the check for updates option in help?

It may not be on their server yet. Just a guess.

I kept both 1.5.0.10, and 2.0. I have made 1.0 my default, and found out that it behaves if I open it from its shortcut. I have a different set of ADDons/Extentions in 1.5.0.10, but I find that if I open 2.0 from the FF2.0.0.3, it will use the 1.5.0.10 extentions, many of which are not compatible. All in all 2.0 seems ok, but it does not play well with its elder ( or, may be, it likes its older brother's toy!).

I replaced 1.5... with it and all is working fine. I like it. Is there a way to have it show an icon of some sort, in addition to the sound, to notify you of mail? Just wondering, no big deal.

No different than before. I never bother with the sound, because I am, always, playing some music. The settings are in the same place, except that you select Tools|Options|General|when new messages arrive show an alert.
