N/S 7.2 - Can't send html format

Postby hleone » Tue 06 Dec, 2005 6:33 pm

I have 2 separate emails (using 2 different mail servers) and profiles in 7.2.

My primary business email won't send in html. Everything converts to plain text.

No problem using my other profile to send in html.

Preference settings appear to be the same in both profiles, specifically my "Send Format" settings.

Any ideas what else I am doing to prevent sending in HTML?

Could it be a setting at my mail server for that email address? I can receive html on that profile (and that mail server), but can't send it out, without it converting to plain text.

If it helps any, in the profile that won't send html format, my "sent" folder copies of html compositions that I have sent also show up only as plain text, and changing my "view" setting won't allow me to view them as html either.

Perplexed, but I am probably overlooking something obvious.

I send messages in both formats (bottom choice). Have you tried it?

Thanks - yes - tried that, but no success. Also tried html only setting without luck.

You have general settings in the Preferences, but detail settings in the Mail and News Settings|Composition and addressing.

All my settings appear correct - both in preferences and in mail and newsgroup settings. Tried "html" setting and "html and plain text" setting.

However, if I don't use the Options tool to manually set the send format of each and every message I compose, N/S 7.2 sends it in plain text only. I have forgotten to manually set to html a few times, after composing some time-consuming html messages, only to find (by looking at the message in my Sent folder), that it was converted to plain text when sent.

Whenever I click on Options-Format in composer, it always shows my send format setting as "auto-detect." Yet, it won't send an html composition (with color, inserted pics, bold type, various fonts, etc) in html format, unless I manually set the format to "html" prior to sending the message.

Also, in my address books, every entry automatically gets the default
setting of "plain text" as each individual's preferred message format.

Is there a way to change the default format setting for my address book entries to "html" instead of plain text?

Still would be very appreciative of any solution to this aggravating problem, so that all my messages are automatically sent in html.

Very confusing indeed....

Fulvio is correct about the various settings. - My question pertains to:
Also, in my address books, every entry automatically gets the default
setting of "plain text" as each individual's preferred message format.

Are you saying that when you create a NEW card, it sets prefered mail = "Plain Text" - ??

Please confirm that this is the case.

I get setting of "Unknown" - for new cards.....

Same here. Unless someone tells me that they don't want HTML, I will send both ways, and, I have the choice to send by HTML only, if I am confident.

Sorry I'm late responding.

Apparently all my address cards were set to "plain text" when I imported them from n/s 4.7.

I can't explain why. I don't think there is even a setting for that on a 4.7 address book card.

I have only added a few new ones in 7.2, and they are "unknown" as you said.

I have about 750 cards in all my address books, and I can't believe I'll have to change all of them to "html" one card at a time.

Is there an easy way to change all my cards at one time to "html"?

hleone,

I have about 750 cards in all my address books

1. How many addressbooks do you have?

2 Are they "imported" or "created" ?

3. Do you have a GOOD plain text editor ?

It can be done, but it takes some explaining to do it.

You can edit the "raw *.mab files with a plain text editor.

Please post the above information.

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Last night I bit the bullet and began re-setting the preferred format on my address book cards one at a time, prioritizing my most frequently used addressees first. It was tedious, but I got the bulk of my "most-used" addresses changed to html.

I haven't fooled much with plain text editing, so this seemed like the most expeditious way for me to correct this frutrating situation.

Sure seems like you should be able to set the default of all your address book cards to html, with one easy setting in preferences or somewhere.

Thanks again for your efforts to help me with this.

Harold,
I cannot even visualize how it could have happened, and, probably, there is a simple way. I, never, select either plain text ot HTML, and I send both ways, so that, at least something get there. Anyway, you solved the problem in the most practical way, although I understand that it is a pain.
I will look into this, and post if I have a solution.

There was a bug some time back that caused imported addresses to all be set to prefer plaintext messages. I remember running into that one, myself. I don't remember what versions of Netscape/Mozilla had that bug, but it would seem you were unlucky enough to find out.

captjlddavis' suggestion of using a good text editor is a quicker solution. If you're very comfortable with such things, or know someone who is, you could remove the plaintext preference from all your address book entries in a matter of minutes. Another possibility might be to import those addresses once again, but using a more recent version of the mail client, presumably with that bug fixed. I would think Thunderbird 1.5 would fit the bill, but, sorry, I couldn't say for certain.
