Postby Antony » Thu 12 Dec, 2002 7:06 pm

Navigator 7.01 Stand-alone NOW available for testing

Navigator 7.0 stand-alone :ns7: - 10.51MB
(for Windows 32bit only)

    Features:
  • one single file, no extra downloads needed.
  • small filesize, only 32??% of full package. Reduces the downloading time and trouble.
  • NOTE: Activation/Registration is not disabled.
  • link to this forum from Help menu.
  • additional entries in Bookmark (links to Netscape Browser Archive, Version Guide, Help Forum), can be removed (only apply to new profile users)
  • SillyDog701 Sidebar, can be removed (only apply to new profile users)

    Extra Information:
  1. Same as previous Netscape streamlines, there is an identify string (SillyDog) in your UserAgent string. This is required by the CCK License Agreement.
  2. Picture below shows 4 extra bookmark entries, (grouped into a folder) link to useful webpages in Silly Dog 701. (note: this only apply to new profiles) Image
  3. If you are using Netscape profiles from previous Netscape, your bookmark and sidebar settings will not be changed.
  4. The default Silly Dog 701 Sidebar Tab is only available for people who create a new profile using the streamlined packages. Everyone is welcome to install Silly Dog 701 Sidebar.
  5. It is recommended not to share Netscape 7 profile with Mozilla.
  6. Although it runs perfectly under Windows 95, Netscape does not official support Netscape 7 run under Windows 95. The supported platforms are: Windows 98, 98Se, Me, NT, 2000, XP.
  7. If you create a new profile with this streamlined Netscape, the additional bookmarks and sidebar tab can be easily removed.
  8. Streamline for Macintosh may be created, however, I need someone to help me build it and test it.
  9. Streamline for Linux might be created, again, I need help.

Please note: This is still in testing period, a updated version might be released later.
Please check it out and provide feedbacks.
Navigator 7.01 download link (build 1) updated version available
Please provide feedbacks/comments. And I recommend you create a new profile for testing purpose.

Testing from Stand-alone 7.01

One small issue with stand-alone 7.01
When opening MySidebar with BuddyList opened.
Error msg:
..../Chrome/packages/aimi/SidebarPanel.xul is not found
Reason: No AIM/NIM component installed, but there is an entry in Buddy List (AIM)

Solution: this Buddy List can be hide by default OR add AIM/NIM back in.

What do you suggest?

I'll use your browser for a few days Antony, try to find any bugs that appear :).

I will check, and see if you have a build 3, and then try again.
I would be forever in debt to anyone who can stop the desktop mess caused by all these installations. Especially the totally unnecessary duplication in the toolbar. In my case, I am hiding IE there, behind the systray, and, of course all the duplicates end up there. I can delete one, but, almost always, the next one causes lockup. I have not tried a custom installation, but I do not need all the time spent with RealOne . All that RealOne does is to move the desktop shortcut to a position different from was there before, and it caused
lockups in every case so far, when I tried to delete it from the toolbar.

Unless there are errors/problems reported, there won't be build 3.

Thanks you for testing. Please do report any issues.

Hi Antony,

All seems well this p.m. with the standalone version! Good going! I did note that when I tried to access my Mail from the 7.0 Version, 7.01 comes up instead??? I should be able to fix this myself, I'm supposed to know what I'm doing, right? WRONG!

O.K., I know it's something simple and I'm in too big a hurry, but this is the problem:

I have a Mail icon in the QuickTray with these Properties:
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -mail -P profilename

I should be able to call up my 7.0 mail, with 7.01 Standalone open.
Won't work, and what I get is a new 7.01 blank open page

I have two separate folders for 7.0 and 7.01
Since the Target line is "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe"
I know that each shortcut looks at the Netscp.exe file, but as it is in both folders, what do I need to do here??

I've never had this problem before with multiple copies of Netscape running??? I just know it's something simple that I'm no doubt overlooking, but it's making me crazy. :?

Ramona,
My first guess is that it is not possible to launch multiple instance of Netscape 7.xx. (* see below)

I would assume
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -mail -P profilename
is Netscape 7.0 (with Mail at least), right?
As you said, if you have 7.01 standalone open already, and if my above theory is correct. The system will try to call the Mail components from the current opened 7.01 Stand-alone.

(*) Also you said
I've never had this problem before with multiple copies of Netscape running???

Can you ever have multiple copies of Netscape 6s OR Netscape 7s running? (not multiple windows) I can't.

DUH! DOUBLE DUH!! Of course I've never had multiple instances of NS running. Mozilla and Netscape, Communicator and Netscape, yes, NS and NS no way!

I knew I didn't have my thinking hat on... Thank you Antony, you're a doll.

The install was smooth as silk, creating the new Profile a no hassle, I always disable Sidebar, so no problem there. It runs very nicely, and I think a tad slower on start than 7.0, what do you think?

As for the start up speed, I will need to exclude the first time that asking me to activate. Otherwise I haven't noticed any differences.

All this with different profiles? In my case, I kept the same profile, so I expected to have 7.01 coming up. Now, I have four 7.01, and one 7.0, and all with different profiles.

Please report any problems you have. (not the one due to Netscape 7.01 itself)

If there are no bugs due to stand-alone, I will release it very soon.
