Navigator Gold 3.04.....will it work on Windows XP Home Edit

Postby WALT » Wed 28 Sep, 2005 9:36 am

I have been using Netscape Navigator Gold 3.04 on Windows 98 for a LONG time.

I am an old dog, and resist change.

I recently had to upgrade computers, and now have Windows xp home edition.

Wondering if you would know if that version of Navigator Gold will run on that windows program???

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks

A quick Google search did find one reference that said that Netscape Navigator Gold 3.04 would run on Windows 2000, a forerunner of XP. It is probably worth it to install it on Windows XP and see what happens.

Be sure to set a System Restore point on the Windows XP machine before installing any software! (Some people have claimed that Netscape 4.x has messed up their Windows XP system.) Also backup your original files on the Windows 98 machine before trying anything with them. You may eventually want to ask here about how to transfer files over to the new machine. [I don't think that I used anything earlier than a Netscape 4.0x version, so I would be of limited assistance on that topic.]

You might eventually want to consider "moving up" to Netscape 4.8 (the last version of the original Netscape series) or even to a "modern" browser. I, personally use the Mozilla Suite (which Netscape 6.x and 7.x branched off from) which is currently up to version 1.7.11 (soon to be 1.7.12). The current Netscape, version 8.x, came off of Mozilla Firefox and has no mailing function, although the Mozilla Thunderbird program can provide mailing capabilities.

SillyDog has a complete set of Netscape versions at its Netscape Browser Archive.

Post back with any more questions. Hopefully someone here can help you, although there are no guarantees.

Thanks for all the help......it is up and running. I use it for email and for website editing. Have gotten used to it, and hard to change. If there was a Netscape browser that you could recommend that has email capabilities, and would allow website editing, I would probably go with your advice and upgrade.

Best wishes

Do not change if you are currently satisfied with your current situation.

All Netscape browsers before the current version 8 have the HTML editor, called Composer. Therefore, both Netscape 4.80 (end-of-the-line for the 4.x series) and Netscape 7.2 (end-of-the-line for the integrated Netscape Suite) have the HTML editor. Upgrading, with retention of data, might involve upgrading to 4.80 first and then to 7.2.

All of the Mozilla Suites also have the HTML editor. Firefox does not. I have never used the integrated HTML composer. I restrict my use to the browser and E-mail package.

Good Luck!

You could always install Netscape 7.x or Mozilla 1.7.x without interfering with the already installed Netscape 4.x or earlier series. The Netscape 7.x or Mozilla Suite series are separate browser programs that can be even be run simultaneously. This way, you could keep Netscape 3 for mail or HTML editing and also run a more modern browser.

Just be sure to backup your user info before installing a new browser.

Netscape 7.x or Mozilla 1.7.x, while installing, can import settings from Netscape 4.5+ (on the same computer) if you allow them to.
