NC 4.8 Browser Malfunction

Postby goGecko » Mon 06 Sep, 2004 7:02 pm

The following was originally posted on secnews.netscape.com but it hasn't been resolved. No, I am not the Original Poster. However, the OP has already been bounced between too many groups on secnews. I don't know how to solve the problem and I'm hoping that someone here does.

"Hi, after a regclean my 4.8 browser screen opens normally but accepts no
URL/addresses, nor manually, nor from emailpointers, nor from bookmarks. It does
not seem to 'connect' to the net.
Email = 100% OK.
No proxies in use; direct Internet
History and addressbar addresses empty - no big deal, maybe a hint?
Did program uninstall & re-install (but kept 4 users accounts, 1.5 GB)

Would it help to let 4.8 create new empty new Users and reattach existing Users
files afterward?
Any hints/suggestions?"

OP has already tried re-installing. Upgrading to Netscape 7.2 is not an option. Detailed list of tried techniques (ineffective) is at netscape.communicator on secnews.netscape.com (port: 563 SSL enabled)

Issue Resolved by OP

Here is the solution eventually found by the OP:
"As a last resort I went into Safe Mode, officially uninstalled 4.8 using its
un-installer cd3248.exe. Apparently this does not eliminate itself and sits/stays in
c:\\windows.
Also the Communicator subdirectory conjtaining AOL, ISU and 'Program + 9 subdir' appears
not to be emptied completely. I also noticed there is a conflict (in normal mode) with
Norton AV 2004 that, although it is terminated, still shows one program.riunning.

Deleted the Communicator subdirectory, then deleted cd3248.exe., then ran 3 different
Register Cleaners that found 21 left-over.entries.

Reinstalled 4.8 as the default browsereh voilà, 4.8 runs like never before including its
browser.

Hope this experience may help you sometime similar.
Thank you all for participating in my struggle to make my senior friend happy with a
'new' 4.8 again on his computer."
