Need A Little Hep Please

Postby ve6tp » Mon 05 Aug, 2002 12:29 pm

Hi:

I've uesd Nescape 7.x for a few months and enjoy it. I hope the final product is completed soon.

It seems that I have caused my own problem. I don't know what I did but I feel that the answer is in the EDIT/PREFERENCES etc. Although I've checked them all completely several times, I can't stop the following problem from happening.

Here is the problem. When I start up Net 7.x I get two flags asking me for passwords. First, I didn't set anything up for a password, secondly I can click on the "close" icon and no problem, they close without any entry of a password being typed in the window.

Can someone please tell me where and what I can do to eliminate these flags from appearing when I start up the program??

Thanks.

Without being able to see the screen, or know more precisely exactly the wording of what you are being asked, it sounds to me like you have a master password setup, as well as maybe an email account setup set to check at startup?

Click on Help | Help Contents and do a search for Master Password to read up on it and see if you even want it. IF you don't, click on Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Passwords and uncheck the box under encrypting vs. obscuring. Then go to Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Master Passwords and reset your password (you will lose any passwords you have saved btw, so do not do this if you don't remember them) and set it to blank. You will still be capable of saving passwords, but once you are prompted for them, they will be saved and you shouldn't be asked for them again.

Open up the Mail/News module and select Edit | Mail and News Account Settings. See if any of your email and/or news accounts are set to check for new messages on start up or after X minutes. If they are and you want them to, you'll have to enter the password for them one more time since you've reset your master password and lost any saved passwords. If you don't want them to check at startup, uncheck those options (under the "server settings" of each mail/news account). You'll still be asked for a password the next time you check mail no matter what since they are lost with the master reset, but it will be a one time deal.

Erm..one thing..Mozilla has a problem with SOME news servers and passwords. This disclaimer isn't related to your problem, just clarifying my "be asked one more time only" claim. I use Earthlink and each group I subscribed to requests a username/password, which is saved, instead of being able to just use the one that was used and saved when I first subscribed. One of the few things OE does better than mozilla.

One last thing. IF my answer is not in any way related to what is happening to you, please post precisely what each box says that pops up asking you for passwords...it will make diagnosis easier :D

You will have to see what you have in the Privacy and Security, and see what settings you have in the Password or Master Password area.

Need A Little Help

Postby ve6tp » Mon 05 Aug, 2002 4:27 pm

Thank you both for contacting me:

I've read everything on the "help" menu and went through all the "Preference" options, checking them all. Can't find anything that would give me an answer.

The flags are both small in size. The title bar for the first one says "Enter Your Password" and the window says "Enter your password for ve6tp@....." The window is blank.

The title bar for the second one says "Mail Server Password Required" and the window says "Enter your password for ve6tp@imap.mail.net...... (which I know nothing about). The window is blank.

In the preference settings:

"Change Master Password" --- there are no entries and "Current Password" window is also blank.

"Privacy & Security" in "Passwords" ---"Remember Passwords" is blank and "Encrypting" is also blank.

I"m sure these flags did not pop up upon starting the program before. It's not a big deal, just very annoying.

Thanks again,
Tru

Looks like mail accounts trying to check mail on startup. This is NOT under Edit | Preferences. As I stated earlier, it is under Edit | Mail And Newsgroups Accounts Settings, which is only visible in the Edit menu when you are in the Mail/News module of Netscape.

Within the settings, check each mail/news account you have setup under the "server settings" to make sure none are set to check mail at startup or after XX minutes.

The good thing is that it looks like you don't have to mess with a master password at all. You MIGHT want to consider enabling the saving of passwords though via Edit | Preferences (note..preferences :D ). That way once you DO check your mail, it will save the password you enter so you don't have to enter it every time. Entirely up to you whether you want to do that.

If you are having trouble finding the locations I mentioned, I made the following screen captures for you...here are the links:

I think that something got screwed up in your Profile. Unless you have set you preferences to have both Navigator and Mail come up at the same time, there should be no request for Password when when you open NS7.
And, then you have unknown and incomplete accounts. If you cannot find any trace of either account in your Mail and News Account Settings, you got a messed up Profile.

Need A Little Help Please

Postby ve6tp » Mon 05 Aug, 2002 7:17 pm

Hi bhsupernaw:

Talk about someone going the whole nine yards to help someone!! That was a lot of work you did for me and I really do appreciate it very much. You even went to the extent of setting up displays for me on the Internet.

Your directions were very clear and easily followed so I didn't have to use the web sites and thats a credit to your patience in understanding and writing instructions. Just great. All is working just the way I want it to.

I still don't know what I did to start all this. I'm always trying things and experimenting but I'm usually careful to remember what settings were present before I make any changes. Maybe it's a sign of old age eh??

Thanks again bhsupernaw, very well done and right on the money.

Best regards,
Tru

The more I think about this, Fulvio's answer about unchecking starting mail when Netscape starts would have been MUCH easier!

Oh well, guess my memory is going too. Better start smoking more...I remember a Modern Maturity magazine (not mine btw) which was listing some of the reasons why folks smoke...one was the physical side effect of increased memory retention :o :!: Still, I would think my pack of camels a day....
